Well, as some of you saw in the post titled "did someone drop a hammer in my engine", a very bad sound forced me into some dissasembly investigation. So far...
At this point, I still was concered about connecting rod/piston issues that couldn't be seen as well as the rod bearings...soo.....
down come the piston retainers and up and out with the pistons
At this point (even before pulling the pan), I figured I was commiting to a total rebuild. It made no sense NOT yanking the pistons if I had the pan down since I had to check the rods anyway. AND since they are out, it makes no sense not to rering them and replace the bearings. AND I guess at this point I have to pull and replace the timing set, I may as well replace the cam with something a little more beefy and go for broke (and by broke, I mean like I'll be in the poor house soon!). AND I guess this means that I need to yank the starter off unbolt the bellhousing and motor mounts and get the block in to be tanked, checked, and done up (walt ole buddy ole pal, you listening?? )
I've got a shop over on the west coast of FLA that will recondition a '77 head for me (springs, valves, 3-angle valve job, backcutting, port and polish) for $225 (plus about $25 to ship it). Seems like a great price.
So, that's where things are at...new head on the way, block going in for a once over (maybe twice over), money just flowing out of my wallet. You can bet this engine well will be SWEET when it's done though!
- pulled rocker cover to check push rods etc...seemed fine
yanked the head (and everything that goes with that). The valves are burnt but I think only like 42 year old valves should be. Don't have a way to check the springs...doesn't matter at this point
pulled the radiator to get the timing cover off (unsuccesful yet)
dropped the oil pan (which I find means removing the center link and dropping the front sway bar ). Nothing seemed obviously wrong at that point except what I would deem excessive play in the timing chain. No chunks of motor in the pan or any filings.
