Need Help - Starter Continuing to Crank

I have installing a rebuild 1968 200 with a Pertronix module and coil in my 1967 mustang. When trying to start it for the first time the starter continued to crank. You can hear the engine trying to run but the starter still continued to crank. This happens with the key in the start position, the run position, and even with the key turned off and taken out of the switch. We actually had to disconnect the battery to get the starter to stop cranking. The starter was tested as working at Autozone before we put it in and the solenoid switch is a new Gold line from Autozone as well. Please help.

the solenoid is bad or getting constant voltage. on my '66 I only have a red w/ blue stripe wire connected to the "s" terminal. if you have a wire connected to the "i" terminal disconnect that, and try it.

I have had the ignition switch fail a couple of times. The plastic Ryton can become separated from metal part of the switch. There is a disc inside that rotates to make electrical contact. The separation can allow the disc to hang up in the start mode or it can also make it difficult to make electrical contact. If the solenoid is new, I might check the switch.

Another possibility is that you may need some shims on the starter. Maybe the gear is binding and not returning into the starter housing.

i would test to see wether the solenoid or its wiring is the problem. remove the wire from the "S" terminal of the solenoid, and connect the battery. if it cranks, the solenoid is bad. if it doesn't crank, but does when teh wire is connected, the problem is in the wiring or ignition switch

I had a similar problem last weekend when i fired up my motor after it had been standing for a year.
The problem was the starter relay sticking. I took it off, gave it a good shake, put it back on and I've had no further problems!

That would be the delicate version of the BFH.

Others tap the solenoid and/or whack the starter case with a wrench or small hammer.

I tried the whacking thing first, but it only solved the problem temporarily! Shaking the cr@p out of it was much more effective!
I've bought a new one just in case it happens again.

I had the same problem when I first started my new engine. I had the wires reversed at the solenoid. Since you also said it was the first time cranking your new engine, it is quite possible that the wires are crossed. Jim

I had the same problem with my 92 tbird. It turned out to be the starter. The bendix was worn and corroded and wouldn't return so the gear remained engaged.

New starter fixed it. I too thought it was either the ignition switch or the solenoid. As soon as the parts store tested the starter it did the same thing.

Obviously I could be one or several things causing the problem.

I had the same problem; t was the starter solenoid. I read somewhere that low voltage toteh solenoid will cause an arc and the interal switch to weld shut. This was on the first start of the year after it had been in storage all winer.

If it was me I'd do the following

1) Verify the wiring is correct to the solenoid.
2) Replace the starter solenoid. They are cheap and I wouldn't trust on that failed on me previously.
3) Charge the battery and make sure it is fully charge.
4) If the starter ran whilst the engine ran there is a good chance the starter is toast. Take it off and get it tested. Most parts places will test for free.

I guess the ignition switch could be bad, but I have to believe that most of the issues are with the solenoid and maybe the starter.

just tried to turn over my new engine in a car that sat in my garage for 14 years with no luck. well after 30 minutes of checking switches and wires i realized the transmission was in drive  but was on jack stands!!! turns over good now :D did'nt know 64 falcons had a nuetral safety switch :?

If the I wire is on the S post this cranking thing will happen. I found that out all by myself once. Is your ignition system still stock? DSII?
