New Fuel Pump Needed ??!?

I've been having a very intermittent problem with loss of power and stumbling. On these rare occasions the car idles fine, but once you put the engine under any sort of load it stumbles, misses and has no power until you back off the throttle (then it will surge a bit).

This phenomenon happened again today so I thought to myself... hmmm... what about the fuel pump. I popped the hood and on close inspection of the pump I could see that it is leaking oil where it seals to the block. I started it and put my hand on the pump and I could literally feel it banging in time with the engine.

So is my diagnosis correct... bad fuel pump?

fuel leaking from anyplace is bad. If its not coming from a hose or fitting that is supposed to have fuel in it its even worse. Check your oil for gas, that would be a bad place to have fuel and kill lots of stuff real quick.

Generally when a pump fails it's going to be consistent, and you'll really notice it at higher rpms where you'll be on the verge of running out of gas.

An *oil* leak at the block doesn't condemn the pump, just the $.25 pump gasket. The banging in time with the engine may or may not be a problem, diaphragm pumps do that by nature. Is it loud? Check the output flow and pressure if you can. Warm up the engine, and get a large coffee can, unhook the fuel line and clamp a long rubber hose on it. Start the engine, and plug the end of your hose with your thumb, it should build pressure quickly. Remove your thumb and it should flow something like a half-quart in 20 seconds. The engine should run plenty long enough to verify pump operation. If it won't build pressure, or fuel just dribbles out, then the pump is bad.

An intermittent stumbling like you're describing sounds more like either a sticking float valve, power valve, or accelerating pump. I'd check the pump, then open up the carb and make SURE it's spotlessly clean.

Oops!, I missread the post, somehow I thought he said there was fuel coming from the block.

What kind of ignition system you running?
What were the last parts changed or adjusted?
