that should work, might be easier as well, my main problem with doing it that way was that i didn't have a good flat edge, and i did have a set of calipers

Coolant leak under valve cover and on top of head = crack on top surface of head, probably between center exhaust valves. Happened to me twice. Have head Magnafluxed and pressure tested by your shop. Leak could also be between valves for cylinders two and three or four and five. The miss could be caused by the smog valve picking up water vapor evaporating inside the engine.

No scum under the valve cover, just some green coolant puddled.

I'm hoping that this worked its way up the head bolt but I'll still have it checked.
