New starter not engaging

Well, my starter went out last week so I replaced it. Started fantastic for the first few days, but yesterday at the gas station I turned the key and the starter made a really fast spinning sound like the appendix is spinning but not engaging. Loosened and retightened the bolts spun the fan and it started up. Drove it home now its in my driveway unable to start no matter what I do. Tried two batteries but the appendix is definitely spinning but won't engage.

I work part time at autozone so I bought one of our starters with my discount. I'm aware that our parts are junk but I don't know if these are characteristics of a defective starter. I DID buy the automatic transmission starter and there was no shims when I removed the old starter. What's this sound like? I don't want to take my headers off again to replace the starter if it isn't the starter.

Thanks in advance guys this forum is the best.

:hmmm: Hi 200ci66.Was having the same problem with my 84 300 ci.Changed the FlexPlate. No joy.Had a friend that has a transmission shop to change the FP again thinking that the new one was defective.Found out that the engine plate holes for the bolts AND the alignment dowels were worn slightly oval letting the starter "walk around"a bit and miss the FP teeth.Replaced that and all has been swell ever since.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.
