Hey, have been reading here and getting info for a while, but just now registered because I need some help!
I have a 65 200 mustang. My starter started making a bad noise whenever you would try to start the engine. It just turns the gears but will not engage (it never gets to the engine at all, only makes the starter sound when you try to start it). I put a brand new starter on it (which was a real pain considering I had to pull of the headers to even get the starter out) and it does the same thing. The only things I can think of is the solenoid or the fly wheel or the starter. I replaced the starter, put on a new solenoid, and had the fly wheel checked... still no difference... ANY ideas?
And does anyone have the exact wiring of the solenoid and starter (just to triple check and make sure that's not it!) HELP!!!

8) it sounds like the bendix drive is not installed properly or is jammed. i had the same problem with my falcon about 1 1/2 months ago.

The sound it is making (in technical terms) is a "whirrr" - it's the gear wheel in the starter turning - but it is not touching anything else to engage, it just keeps spinning.

It would be interesting to check the starter with jumper cables, off the car. See how far the gear shoots out when spinning, and compare to the setback of the flywheel teeth. One dumb thing I found on a motor was an enforcer ring between the (manual) flywheel and crank. It took about 3/32 off the effective engagement of the tooth sets.

Regards, Adam.

The only thing that I can think of is maybe I have the wrong starter... (the bendix works fine and I have enough juice from the battery)

What starter did everyone use? Did anybody have a problem with getting the wrong one? Anybody know the correct part number? Do you have a starter that fastens on with 3 bolts or two bolts (mine is a 65 mustang 3 speed with a three bolt pattern)
