I have had my 66 I200 w/C4 since Feb 02. I have a problem. When the the car is first started there is a real loud knock. After a while the knock goes away & the car runs fine. It has been a while since I changed the oil. I have a new harmonic balancer to put on. The engine does rock a little bit. I had the front suspension replaced as well as the motor mounts. The shop that did it said the engine movement is not excessive, but he normally works on V-8s. It is a Mustang restoration shop. All suggesions or comments are welcome.

can you give us more info?
it sounds like you have a lifter that isn't workin right

and what do you mean by movement? as in a possible broken motor mount? if so, place a block of wood under the oil pan and jack the engine up, see if one of the mounts is broken

The motor mounts are brand new. The engine shakes a little from left to right. My main concern is the knock.

Ive got the same problem...knowing what little I know, I have narrowed it down to a "sticky" lifter..It's specifically within the driver side valve cover, so that where i get my diagnosis...I also replaced my motor mounts and have some motor vibration/shake.. I've posted on here on this issue and learned my timing is probably off and needs to be set...I dont know if i've resolved anything for you, but having the same set up and same symptoms, hope it helps...if not, the board will provide plenty of advice for you beyond my limited knowledge

After ripping my motor apart and not seeing anything TOO severe like a spun nearing or cracked rod, I'm thinking this was probably my problem as well.

Same symptoms...at first...it doesn't get better with age. I always wrote it off as cold starting nature of the beast, but like I said, i doesn't get better with age!
