Offy tri-power doesn't fit the 78+ large log intake

So I got the 78+ large log and they have milled the top as much as they can but they say the original carb mounting surface is still a 1//2 inch away from the offy intake.... Any suggestions? Machine shop states they are not comfortable milling te off intake as it is thin to start with and needs the O-ring recesses.

I had a similar issue with my '78 head. Have the machine shop prep the head, bolt down the offy intake and measure the gap. Make a spacer with a gasket on each side, remove & reinstall the intake with the spacer. This spacer will be similar in shape as the gasket and it can even be phenolic or similar non-metallic material if you want.

Our best informants have covered this in depth.JD is jdn21758, and he says the late flat top log is for all post 68 cast as C9 onwards, but it needs some customization with the hex log D8 and E0 model changes

Even Powerband's Momma could help you out.

Powerband's photobucket has 34 albums, but under BODYWORK alone hhas 17 pages and 401 photos, he covers off just some of the details of how the later adaptor fits the D8 casting on his 250

See kevinl1058 runs his on a D8 log.

Look in his album in page 3

Quite a lot of prep is required, with some extra material needed to cover the orginal surface in some cases. The stock O rings are best replaces with Devcon/JB Weld, or spot brazing an refacing if you don't want to make an intermediate custom gasket.

I have the correct manifold.... I looked through both members photo albums and it looks like their manifolds fit right on. I may try the phenolic spacer idea and see how that shakes out...

"Adapter" fabrication from multiple gaskets or custom materials may be needed for the various bolt-on variables with Offy type Tri-Power setups. The O-Ring mating surface is at best a compromise for the rapid temperature differences/changes between carb and intake/exh, ' not convinced it is the best compromise with ethanol laced fuel and modern materials available.

.

... 'hope your Tri-Power setup "details" are working out, enthusiastic encouragement is offered by a few veterans here. I've been running a successful Offy Tri-Power on street and strip for over five years testing the limits of it's capabilities and Tri-Power has provided endless hours of interest ...

. .

have fun

Powerband - have you ever though of using side draft carbs on your common plenum manifold - to reduce hood clearance issues?
