oil pan differences

i picked up a replacement oil pan for my 63 Falcon with a 170 and its not exactly the same as the original. i was told its for the 170 but the drain plug is towards the back of the belly on the new pan and the pan thats on the car has the drain plug on the side of the belly. will this work? if need be i can post a pic this afternoon.

As long as the actual shape of the oil pan is the same so the dip stick will register correctly and the oil pickup will be able to suck the oil from the pan appropriately the location of the drain plug is of little consequence.

Do check under the car to see that the new drain plug location won't be blocked by a part of the frame or the exhaust or some other obstruction, but otherwise the location will be of little consequence. It's probably nothing more than a year-to-year manufacturing variation, or a variation between the pans used on different automobile models to make the drain plug more accessible.

thanks for the advice!! i'm going to pull the current pan and compare teh two side by side and test fit the new pan. the only problem with the current pan is that the drain plug won't fully tighten because the threads on the oil pan are stripped. i'm not sure if i can remove the old pan and tap it a litle bigger or not. i would have to buy a new tap. i'm not sure yet.

any of the chain auto parts stores sell self-tapping over-sized drain plugs. The tiny amount of metal they produce wont harm a thing. saves you from having to swap the pans.

:D Many years ago a friend of my Father had an odd ball oil pan with a stripped drain plug.He just cut out the stripped one and cut another one that was good out of a junk pan and welded it in place.Worked like a charm.
