OK, Now what?

Hey.......it was the vacuum advance that was causing my problem. I haven't had a chance to open her up all the way yet, but in general I think it's fixed.

Thanks for the lead on Vacuum Advance!!!

OK I'm confused.

Didn't comment on the vacuum advance affecting top end power when first posted, but now I think I should.

Why would vacuum advance affect top end power? Or is this a ported advance (since I seem to fixate on manifold advance). If manifold advance, it wouldn't matter, right?

If he is running the Loadamatic distributor then the only advance mechanism is the vacuum advance using the carb port. My stock 68 VW Bug has a similar advance unit, I have never taken it above 80 and that was on the freeway (scary too). I would be very disapointed in a 200 powered Mustang that couldn't outrun my Bug :P

The vaccumm advance comes on at high throttle, It ADVANCES the timing at higher rpms, of course it would make a difference... have a timing light?

just hook it up and put a little white out on the 0 degree notch ... I like to set mine at about 10-12 degrees advance at idle...

keep the light pointed at the balancer and either have someone hit the throttle or reach up and pull it.. you should see it advancing to probably 30 degrees or better when you rev up
