Oklahoma Overhaul

Well, wouldn't you know it. My 'new' 250 appears to have been the beneficiary of an "Oklahoma" overhaul -- a valve job and a can of spray paint. :devilish:

mikeson asked if he could use my short block to finalize the gear-drive installation, and naturally, I said yes. Well, Mike asked if I could pull the head and accessories to make it easier to move around, so I pulled the head. The pistons had been cleaned up and the head looks like it has had a valve job, but the lifter galley was still pretty gunked up and there were no signs of honing in the bores.

Oh well, at least the price was reasonable. I'm going to vat the short block, and do the usual things before turning it over to Mike.

We call that a "Wrecker's rebuild". The dead giveaway is the red-tinted used motor oil filtered and resold to them.

 Did the sales pitch include "Good strong motor" or something similar?

I guess I could have called it a "Wal-Mart" overhaul (out of respect for where the can of spray-paint was purchased... ;)), but in this case I called it an Oklahoma overhaul simply because Altus, Oklahoma is where it was performed. No insult intended to the good citizens of that fine State.

Only now I have to offer a retraction...

Last night we put the engine on the stand and tore it down in preparation for a trip to the vat. Oops... Turns out the engine has been "freshened" with new rings and bearings, a hone job with a fine-grade stone (clearly visible in good light), and a new oil pump. The only thing not in very good shape was the crud in the lifter galley. Either the vat operator didn't know what he was doing, or was just plain lazy. In any event, the engine doesn't need another trip to the machine shop.

Sooo, Mike, I guess we're ready. Thursday work for you? :D

Leroy,

I bought the car (and engine) in Altus, Oklahoma...the extreme SW corner of the State.

Since it was done right you can call it an Oklahoma overhaul.

Glad to hear it is going to work out like you wanted.

Stan,

Thursday works, I'll give you a call then.

Cheers Mike

Cool, Mike. Early to mid-afternoon would be best for me, and least traffic hassle for you... :D
