Part Decode - expert required please!

Well-known member
.. so I'm trying to find correct parts to rebuild my 7.25" diff.

My car is a 65 but I suspect the axle might be from a 62 Falcon as far as I can guess .. not sure.. please see these links for the clues.

The 2nd digit of the cast number on the case has either been not cast correctly or to me looks more like a ground-down '2' than a '5' suggesting a 1962.

Also on the internals of the diff I can see what I think is 'C1DW' starting a part number (1961 Falcon).. an expert eye would be appreciated.

If I am ordering parts (in this case spider gears and pin for inside the diff) would the parts be the same for a 61/62 diff as a 65 diff anyway?

Dataplate attached to bolt of diff so may not necessarily be correct for diff

THANKS!

Nah, its a legitamite 1965 diff, the long pinion 7.25 diff came out in October 1961, so it carries the "year first minted" C code.

LIke you posted here

OOOoo that's interesting , I thought the part was stamped with the year it was actually made (eg C5 for 1965) rather than the year it was originally designed / fitted
Interesting m, cheers for that! :)

Hey Route-66 - no shame in that. I had a person from the local ford stealership try to tell me I had a '64 because a lot of the parts had '64 part numbers. I didn't bother trying to explain to him there was no way it was a '64.5 because, well, they didn't make that bodystyle then. :P

It gets worse, sometimes cylinder heads and blocks have orginal minted dates years different to the modle year. This is the case in my 1967 XR Falcon engine...it has a C6 engine casting and C1 head casting, but a date code which is 1966.

Generally, after the 1965 Clean Air Act, all major engine parts would have the same year engineering castings, but diffs, transmissions, steering not always.

In my study of the previous 6.75"short pinion diff used in the 1960 to 1961 Falcons, I found the same corporate light duty Pinto/Mustang II/Fox/Ranger 6.7 "diff was used for the Pinto, LIma, Cologne and some 3.3's. From late 1969 to 1988 when it was last used on 2.0 liter Rangers, it carried a short pinion seal part number which was listed as 1958. Predating the Falcon line up two years. Go figure...

Really interesting, from all the decoding tables on the net I'd never have understood that without those explanations!!
..so... when I order parts I would be fine to order parts for it as Falcon 1962 right through to a Mustang 1965 axle and they would all be the same?
Thinking about it I've replaced the pinion oil seal and brake parts including slave cylinders and ordered them as 1965 parts .. so that backs up your explanation too!
Cheers guys! :)
