Pertronix 1 Modifications

Today I installed a Pertronix - Ignitor 1 and I am curious whether anyone else that installed one of these on their 200cid had to make any modifications to the Ignitor base plate in order to set the air-gap to .030 per the instructions? I installed this Ignitor on my 65' 200cid which has a load-a-matic dizzy. I had to enlarge the hole in the Ignitor base plate in order to close the air gap to .030. I also had to file some off the base plate that was hitting the dizzy shaft. The Ignitor kit was #1261 and was listed on Pertronix's website for a 1949 - 1974 6cyl for all models with a Motorcraft distributor. I got everything installed and everything is fine, but I am just curious if anybody else experienced this problem. Jim S.

I had to modify the base plate on my Pertronix II to set the air gap. A little frustrating since they're supposidly application specific, but it was a simple modification.

A "bolt on" should be that....it shouldn't have to have extra tools like files or dremels to have to MODIFY it to make it work :bang:

James, for what its worth, i have had to modfy by filing the mount to also get proper clearance on every pertronix i ever used. William

LaGrasta, What type of dizzy do you have on your 170cid??

Linc200, I agree that a "bolt on" shouldn't need to be modified!

Yesterday prior to installing the Ignitor, and prior to making any modifications, I called Pertronix's Tech Support and told the Tech Rep that the base plate did not fit properly (couldn't close the gap to .030) and that I was planning on modifying the base plate. I thought maybe he would tell me that the particular model that I ordered (kit #1261) was the wrong one for my application, and talk me out of making modifications; maybe have me send it back to them for the correct kit! He said "no problem" on making the modifications; so I assume this was the correct kit (#1261). Like I said before, no big deal; it is installed and working fine. Just seemed like I shouldn't have had to make any modifications and wondered if anyone else ran into that problem? Thanks, Jim

P.S. I set my spark plug gap(s) to .040 and my timing to 11 degrees BTC; I normally set my timing to 6 degrees with points (I have a manual transmission). Does this sound about right?
