Pertronix Ignitor

I just ordered one of the pertronix ignitors for a 200 six cylinder engine WITHOUT thermactor. I have a 1979 200 c.i. engine in my 65 Mustang coupe but don't have the thermactor system. However, after receiving the Pertronix ignitor, I noticed that the label on the box said it was for a pre-1965 six cylinder. Did I order the right one or should I have ordered the thermactor version even though I don't have the thermactor? Thanks for any assistance.

I have a 79 200 that I'am putting in a 63, I though that is was a electronic distributor already, Why are you putting in a Petronix? Bill

The '79 does have an electronic distributor.

My guess as to why he's using the Pertronix is because he wants to keep the original distributor. The factory electronic distributors have a larger cap and also require different plug wires as the terminals are different. easy enough to do the electronic distributor conversion, but you will lose the stock appearance.

Unless you use the DSI cap which is very similar in appearance to the points distributors.

Uses the same plug wires, too.

THERE REALLY IS NO EXCUSE!!!

lol

If you're using a power steering pump on a '60s block, you can't use the big cap. It won't fit. You can use the early DS II cap like this:

my 78 block,80 head 200 has points,, so doesnt mean anything,, it could of been changed :)

Just bought my DSII conversion parts, including the big dizzy cap, and just ran across your post. I have a 66 stang w/power steering and I agree, the big cap will not fit. My question, what parts do I need to exchange. The big dizzy cap and the "adapter" from the dizzy to the cap? Or, do I need a whole different dizzy setup to use the smaller cap?

I'm stuck. Thanks for any help.

74 maverick is what I see the 'ds1' cap listed for most often. I believe you also have to get the rotor to match it. It looks like the points caps (female wire terminals) but will be listed 'w/electronic ignition'.

Looks like autozone part no F922 for cap, looks like my stock cap on the 66. rotor f939. Noticed that the part no. for the reman dizzy for the '74 is slightly different than the DSII I bought. The later model part no. is 30-2690, while the part no. for the 74 mav is 30-2672, in the pictures the difference looks like an extra vac nipple coming up from the canister on the dizzy. Do I use the 7mm wires on the DSI cap? or the 8mm wires? The parts are relatively cheap, so I'll just order them and hope for the best. Should be able to exchange the parts ordered previously.

Has anyone done a mod to the power steering pump bracket to clear the DSII cap?

Other ID tip is it looks like a points cap but has mounting screws (vs. the clips that the points and DS2 use)

7mm and 8mm is not going to be much different in a fairly stock street application. The 8mm could give you better chance of not allowing the spark to ground out to something or cross fire in adverse conditions but I doubt if things got that wet the wires would be your biggest problem.

Important things are that they have the correct ends which is the same as the points caps. The ds2's have what is commonly called the HEI terminals which look the same as the spark plugs.

I would not worry about the part numbers being different on the remans, now days one size fits pretty much all (or has to be made to fit by the user). Most likely the difference is theoretically in the advance curves which should be checked and redone anyway to fit your setup and needs

thanks, tj, the autozone cap shows clips, not screws! Saved me an extra trip to town for sure. I've got a napa right across the street from the office. Thanks to all once again, this project may get moving yet!

the correct autozone dizzy cap is part no. F948, it showed up on their '75 Maverick part list, $7, versus Napa $19.
