picked up a bonnet today

picked up a bonnet for my car today off a buddy. he works at a proplane place and they had some old dual fuel trucks they were getting rid of. nice cast AL and fits holley carbs. it is about an inch too tall for me but I can mill it shorter. best part is the price was right....FREE all I gotta do is mod an LT1 intake on the mill for him (so it will bolt on a 350) hands are pretty much tied this weekend on getting too much more done since mondays are my machine shop days (only one hour of class those days) so NEXT monday I will have the manifold finished, bonnet shortened, cliffy adaptor modded (some carb linkage hits it and just need a slight notch milled in the side) I just wish I had a nice pro sized buffer to clean this puppy up with now!!

also a quick question...do you think a stock spin on filter housing will hold up to the higher pressures? the fairlane used a stock spin on housing filter like the mustangs and falcons but it is remote mounted on the block and I kinda like it (IE too lazy to change it if I don't have too) or shoudl I go to a AN style filter (running AN fuel lines)

Bonnet looks good, should modify easily.

I am using a stock screw in filter, but your holley may or may not have the sintered brass filter inside the fuel inlet. They are OK but not the best. I don't think AN filter is neeeded, but don't use the glass see-thru kind, they won't handle the pressure.

But really, If you use a really good, high flow fuel filter before the pump inlet you don't really need anything after the fuel pump.

no I have the old school 60's ford srcew on housing paper setup. it is like the pump mounted filters but on my block. I know it will only really see like 20psi MAX so I shouldn't be too scared but having a filter burst all over the enginebay on the DRIVERS side doesn't sound fun

I wouldn't trust those stamped sheet metal "threads" over 8 psi max fuel pressure. Ditch it.

You can't afford a fuel fire - trust me.

Don't ever use regular fuel line either, use the stuff for EFI.

I was planning on AN or hardline I hate modern rubber line. last 5' I have bought over a couple year span has all gone hard, separated or whatever so that when you go to remove it you have to replace it (big business?) so AN or inverted flares as WAY cheaper to run in that case. I was planning on maybe a billet AN style filter from russell or whoever.

well I do have to say that the billet cliffy adaptor is almost nice to have. since I was running the 5200 I figured I would just bolt on the 350cfm holley and get it running on the car at least before I boost it all. well well how stupid was I!! the linkage on the sides of the carb hit the adaptor plate so I have to mill a small notch on either side of it now (complete PITA) but it will be on tomorrow. today I cut the inlet off that bonnet of mine and will trim that excess portion down so that a 2.5" tube end can be welded on it for an easy hose connection. I figured since it is all coming together in the next week or two that I better get started on my diary of the build like others.... btw here are some pics to pad this up some.

so progress is being made. so tomorrow I might have the bonnet ready to go on but mainly I am trying to get these wheel spacers turned down to go on the car.

well I guess I finished machining on the manifold today. I flatted the turbo mount and cleaned up a couple spots. the only prob is when it warped it screwed up my bolts holes so they just need filed a hair or a drill ran through them and then they are good to go. so basicly all that I have to do on that is some minor cleanup and buy some bolts (remember I am on a bicycle now so a trip out for parts is kinda a big deal)

I also clearnaced the cliffy carb plate for hte holley to work bind free now. so all I need for the carb is a new float and some jets (has 40's in it) and the throttle and that side is pretty much done. granted these are biggie items but I got a couple weeks time frame before I need the car finished (needs finished and driveable for a car show in october)

I am poor and your making me want to turbo my car... you and matt, and linc, and everyone elses turbo cars... If I find a good used turbo I may join the club...

Ohhh he I just noticed something.. you painted your manifold... you know if you start your car up it will blow up! so how about I pay shipping and you just ship your car here and Ill give you some money for your troubles... even if you clean it off it still will blow up.. its ufixable, and since your turbos on its no good, so just send it along with the hat... lol... worth a try.. Brian didnt believ eme but one day his will implode and he'll with he listened...

well once I get it running on this setup I will prob start working on a killer setup much like Will's (only I am thinking alloy head, big turbo, water injection, EFI....some big bucks)

I may be selling my set-up shortly.

Well I got the oilfeed line done. I also got the new fuel line ran to the carb from the pump. I will prob cut down my drain tomorrow so I can get that on then. I cleaned up some stuff on the motor today (removed the old filter setup and 5200) I will get some pics tonight of it all. I am considering getting an E0 head and doing a direct mount carb instead of the spacer (more airflow and better hood clearance) Pics will follow later today as I got some more stuff to do out there and will get them all at the same time to post.

I just about had the bonnet finished and I think the TIG pedal died again (this is an OLD hobart at school I am using and the pedal will short and only be on or off or kinda on) but I picked up the rest of my oil supply parts and they will go in this weekend along with my new float and jet extensions. I will also try to get my oil drain trimmed down tomorrow or saturday and then I can fire it back up with the holley on it. I am STILL waiting on my throttle cable kit from ebay (about to get my paypal money back on it I think) so I still need to sort that out (I got a fox tbird pedal to work with)

taking some more pics but it should be running this weekend. I got the manifold finished and bolted up and the turbo is getting tossed on as soon as I go back out (needed to put the wastegate back on it and the drain) the feedpipe is there....but need the BOV mounted still I gotta pull the carb off to hack the choke horn off it and fill in the choke hole but that is basicly it!! I might toss on some of those rubber sewer connectors just so I can run it and drive around (well as soon as I get a cable throttle working) I am taking pics as I finish up everything tonight and tomorrow and will update on monday evening (will be taking the feedpipe in to the shop to make a flange and such)

also it has 40 jets in it right now so I was gonna order up some 60 65 and 70 jets to work with on it. goal is to just get it driving and not melt a piston.

The "rubber sewer connector" is a Plumb-Quick. Don't know how good the rubber would be with solvent vapours in an engine cooling down after running.

Hey man,
In the pics on photobucket, is the line comin from the valve cover to the turbo the oil return or oil supply? Just wonderin how I oughta do my oil return line
Matt
