While changing my exhaust gasket for the 3rd time Saturday I noticed a ½â€￾ pipe fitting plug on the passenger side of the block. Anyone know what that is for? I’ve been reconsidering the digital dash and wondering about extra access points, thinking of adding temp, oil, and tach.

Also my speedometer spins up to about 50 and then just hangs there until I hit 70, then jumps up, would that be the cable?

That's a coolant drain plug if it's like our motors. Square head? As to the speedo - yes, the cable could be sticky. I think they might sell some type of lubing setup for motorbike cables (that is where I heard of it - dirt bikes) that is effective in getting fresh oil into the cable sheath.

Cheers, Adam.

Thanks Adam, I'll pull the housing off and check the cable. I understand now that it has a sqaure end. That I should check both ends and make sure it spins freely. Hope it's not the sppedo itself.

I'm torn between wanting the accuracy of the digital guages, being able to see them at night, and wanting the original looking cluster.

A coolent drain plug, thats good to know. Wonder how long a temp sensor would last that close to the header. I'm full of bad ideas. I really don't have a good place to add a 3 guage pack, at least not where I could readily see it. It's hard enough just reaching around the wheel to turn on the wpers

I ran a temp sensor under the turbo on my tbird for a few years with no problems. as long as you keep the wire off the exhaust you should be ok. btw I think the best location for a sender is going to be near the front of the head. I am running my autometer and it reads cold with it in the stock location on the back of the head. when I had a 180 tstat in it it only read around 150 when warmed up (I have no fan) I have a 195 on 180 off fan switch and I think I am moving it to the stock location and moving the sender up to the heater hose outlet (have a handy T in it right now with the fan switch)

Just don't be too ebullient in the way you crank that drain plug. It may be well rusted in by now!

And the rust will go most of the way to the cylinder wall, so be prepared to dig with something and then do a good coolant flush.
