piston ring placement?

what are the positions for the piston rings? I am putting a new motor back together and don't have the ring instructions (not the one who built the motor) are positinos generic? a quick paint sketch would help tons

Nick, my old Falcon manual says the top ring gap is right opposite (as far away as poss) from the exhaust valve; the second ring is 120° from that point; I always take it they mean clockwise in a top view. Then the top of the oil ring another 120° clockwise, and the bottom another 120.

Naturally, unless you're building a race motor, piston notches to the front.

There's another ring layout I've seen often where the compression rings are each 60° offset (one left, one right) from the forward point on the block centreline. The oil ring top and bottom are similarly opposed but facing the rear.

Sorry I can't specify which is best for your car, but they are the two I know of.

Regards, Adam.

I went with the second layout you mentioned (what I have used before) all I think is important is that no rings are lined up and that no ends are on the outermost sides. well I got my short block assembled tonight. heading out for gaskets and dropping the head and the rest on tomorrow.

duz it realy matter where the gaps are ?
Just as long as theres no joins that meet up with other joins and there away from the wrist pin is all that matters , as rings spin on the pistons any way!!
