Ponderings

I've been considering this in part and wanted to get some thoughts and impressions.

First off, I have been considering a remote oil filter kit for my car. Being as it takes the almost standard FL1A, I figure it shouldn't be a big deal to find one. However here comes the tricky part.

I took a look at the external tranny cooler off of my parts car and that got me thinking. Would it be possible to mount an external filter kit with an cooler?

#1 Would it be possible?

#2 *IF* it would be possible, would the cooler go before or after the filter, or would it matter?

#3 Would there by any forseeable gains in oil life by adding either or both? I know it would increase oil volume, and provide the oil a chance to cool off by spending more time out of the block.

This idea is a work in progress, because I need to figure out if I can get a cooler that won't be a bottle neck.

I'm just curious and wondering if anyone here has ever done anything similar.

Yes it is possible to mount both and there are gains to be had; cooler oil means cooler internal parts and less oil break down. I think that the cooler should be mounted after the filter so that particles in the oil don't gather in or block passages in the cooler. My dad has a similar set up for both engine and trany oil.

You can probably look through Summit or Jegs websites and find that oil cooler kits with adapters are common. In order to mount a cooler, you essentially need a remote filter and adapter piece that has hose fittings.

Howdy tim and all:

As usual, I start off with a question or two. Why do you need an oil cooler? What is the temperature of your oil? Where did you take that temp? If you don't have an oil temp guage to work with that's where I'd start. Get the facts before you start. If you don't know where you started, how will you know what you have when you make a change?

Oil must be up to a certian temperature to do its job effectively. Oil temp can be too low, which is not good. The volume of oil will not raise/lower operating temp. It just takes less/more time to get to operating temperature. Oil temp that is either too high or too low is not good for your engine. Oil manufactures have a recommended heat range for optimum oil performance. It changes with types of oil and with weights.

If you decide you need a cooler, it can be mounted either before or after the filter.

First guys, thanx for all the input.

David, I do not have a problem, so this idea was not to try and use a band aid to fix an existing problem.

I think the main reason I considered it was just the lazy ness factor. With the way I drive, it would be nice if I could lengthen the amount of miles between oil changes.

The other reason is that I am driving a 13 year old car (I know a baby by this site's standards), but I was thinking a bit of extra insurance would be nice.

I'm probably going to do some more research and do some testing like the temp testing you mentioned above. Then I can re examine if I would actually need one.
