does it sould like your geting fire ball going through the pipe? not a backfire. i have that going on in my truck. is some what rich and i have no cats. if it sound like that your cat may be burnt. i have such a short exh. that you can see the fireballs

idle mixture is too rich. your popping noise is a normal symptom. in my experience, there is a fair chance of backfiring when this popping noise is present. if such a backfire happens and your muffler is old, it may split open. ask me how i know
if you lean out the idle mixture it should go away, assuming the carb still responds to that screw (sometimes they don't when they get old)

oh, and if you want to scare your friend while you're beside him on the freeway, let off the gas and get that popping, turn the key off for about 2 seconds, then back on, and you'll get a nice little backfire - enough to light up the side of the road on a dark night  bad advice on a stock muffler

I doubt he has a cat on his '66... the popping you are hearing is most likely fuel combusting in your exhaust. Lean out your idle mixture and it should go away.

well i said two things and one of them has been comfermed by you me and plank. and besides is 1:20 and i need to get some sleep you know how it is. it gets late and you say sh*t that doesnt make sence. like a 66 with cats

check your timing. I had the same and I advanced the timing to 12* and reset the points, problem solved.

Mine does that all the time. I actually like the sound though. My choke is broken so i can't fix it.

when my donut gasket was blown out it would do that

sae with any other car i had that had a rusted out muffler or shortened/opened pipes

You have an exhaust leak. My flange gasket leaks and pops when decelerating.
i have an exhaust leak too, but leaning out the idle mixture caused the symptom to go away.
and that makes sense, the ex leak introduces air to the unburned fuel in the exhaust, and the mixture burns

The problem lies in carburettor or timing. Changing to a NEW, not rebuilt, carb should fix it.
Also, it is NOT recommended to turn the ignition on then off while driving. You can hole a piston!
