Price on a rebuild

I went into an engine rebuilder today to ask how much it would cost to rebuild my engine top and bottom.I have 64.5 mustang with a 170 and wanted to keep it original so I would rather rebuild the 170 than stick in a 200(which I originally wanted to do).
He told me for a base rebuild,I was looking at $1800.00 Canadian and if I wanted extras,such as porting,I would be looking a $3 or 4 hundred more.
Can anyone give me an opinion as to if this sounds reasonable or am I getting shafted.I have seen remanufactured 200's for alot cheaper than this.

sounds like its a tad on the far side. 1600 Canadians dollars are in the neighbourhood of about 1400 US$. Now, if all the parts are inlcuded (valves, seals, gaskets, pistons, camshaft, lifters, pushrods) it may be acceptable. High, maybe, but not unreasonably high - as long as its good quality work.

But tell me, why don´t you take the easy route and just put a "170"-sticker on one of those rebuilt 200s, and enjoy the benefits of seven mains and extra torque?

I promise, I won´t sing out...!

Painted nicely and dressed up with all the cleaned accessories, the original 170 should make an appropriate keepsake for the living room, I bet...!

Prices can vary quite a bit from region to region. I think they are in the ballpark but why don't you ask a couple of other shops for quotes? Remember that the cheapest is not always the best route so make sure you spell out exactly what quality you want.

Comparison shopping will always win out. Pick up that phone. Don't forget to try the AutoPart Stores. They too use local builders and usually have quantity discounts that get passed onto the public. I bet you can get a rebuilt block for less than a $1000.

I priced rebuilding a stock 200 from 3 different shops and they were all around $1500-$1800 US. Comparitively your price sounds pretty good.

the minimum budget for a home rebuild is $1000usd, thats only doing what you have to, reusing pistons... and thats my own labor, which means no fees for that. that sounds reasonable

I got my head rebuilt, milled, hardened exhaust seats, and grinding by the valves for $360, then the block rebuilt for $600 using all new parts, including boring and a reground crank and cam.

I had to put the engine back together and install it, but I got a 1 year warranty as well. Seems a little high to me, but thats just what I got. Houston, TX is the area.
