Problem with manifold to head connection

I have an exhaust leak at 6th cylinder. Apparently, the threaded hole in the cast iron head is stripped or significantly damaged. The previous owner put a 5/16 - 18 bolt through the hole with two nuts on the manifold side to "engineer" a repair. Is there a tried and true way to repair this at least in some semi-effective way? Thanks for your help!

Actually that method could work ok, but for the very best way to repair the thread in the head use a Heli Coil. Also make sure that the exhaust manifold is still flat by putting a straight edge across it, if it's not you should have it resurfaced flat. If the head is off also check its surface too and have it turned too. If you are stuck with the head still on you could use some of the Hi Temp silicone on the gasket and port surfaces to help seal it. Good luck
