Proform starter?

Does anybody know if the Proform starter part# 66271 will fit '53 Ford mainline 3 spd std trans with a 223 cid engine? It says fits flathead v8 std trans and as far as I know its the same transmission. I'm trying to eliminate the big bulky starter drive style.

If the flathead and 223 bellhousing patterns are the same, then it ought to work. Can you get an even cheaper Ebay copy of the Proform?

I found the Proform starter for about $140.000, I think thats already pretty cheap considering the 12v starter drive type new is about $186.00, last I checked. But it probably wouldn't hurt to check out E-rape.

New question?

From what I understand the old starter drive type pulls the starter gear into the flex plate ring gear...So the Proform new generation starter pushes the starter gear into the flex plate ring gear with the solenoid that sits a top the starter eliminating the big bulky starter drive...right? I added new pictures of both to first post of this thread.

You are correct in that the original starter pulls in to the ring gear from the rear and that the intended pushes in from the front of the ring gear. There are quite a few of us that would like to know if there is an alternative to the original pull-in starter setup. Please keep everyone informed of any possibilitys. I can't offer any suggestions, as mine continues to operate flawlessly, but would like to have information available when and if I need it and I am sure others are in the same position.

I know somebody in the parts buisness that will let me try the starter to see if it works and if not let me send it back...if there company carries Proform starters. I will keep y'all posted.

No I haven't.....I was at the junk yard last weekend & found a mint cond. 12v starter out of '61 ford truck for $10 ...but would still be intrested in the proform starter after I get the '53 Mainline on the road. Depending on how much money I have left after I buy all the litte stuff I need to finish the install on the 223, I would like to have the new skool starter. I'll let y'all know ASAP.

IIR some truck starters of your vintage had a longer shaft, setting the bendix further toward the rear. Be sure to check for this.

Hey Guys tried this starter & doesn't work on 1953 ford car with originally 215cid stnd trans but was at the junk yard and was pullin' parts off a '61 ford truck 223 stnd trans and that starter looks to have the same bolt design

On the oposite side, I have scrounged a starter from a 215 that I need to check out to see if it works. If it does work, I am going to attempt to try it in my 1962 223 and see if it is compatable. I have several other projects ahead of this, so it may be awhile till I get to it.

Well I know the 215 std trans starter works in the 223 stnd trans (the trans is the OEM to the car), cuz thats what I been using to crank the 223 & its a 6v starter too in a 12v system.

That ought to really whirl the old whiz-bang. Years ago, I converted a Model A over to 12 Volts and left the starter as-is, and it really spun that engine. I haven't checked this extra starter I have yet, but it is good to know it will play friendly with my 223. Thanks.

Yeah it really made that starter come alive. I was in the garage tinkering around and I think...and don't quote me on this but the starter I pulled out of a 1961 F-100 looks to have the same bolt patern as the proform starter, but know for a fact doesn't work with 1953 Ford car stnd. trans.
