I have a 1960 ford 223 and I am about to put the cylinder head on. I have a new gasket but I want to know if I need to put any sealer on before I torque it down? Any tips? Is it bad to just but the head on and the gasket and call it a day,
If it's a stock type i.e. thin steel shim or copper than yes! Mostly I only use copper coat now (on both sides of gasket if done per instructions it's very good) us old timers also use to use silver spray paint.
If you have a comp style head gasket like a Fel Pro (Permatorque or Printoseal) you would not need to.
Of course first make sure head and deck surfaces are flat (true).
