Can anyone tell me if the 1941 flathead six 226 three speed trans is the same as what is behind a flathead V-8 three speed? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

no. The transmission cases are different. Everything else in the transmission interchanges. Do you have a car or pickup? Can you post pictures of it? What do you plan to do with it?

One of the vehicles I would like to own some day is a '41 pickup with a flathead six. Funds and garage space mean that will probably never happen though.

Well actually this 226 is in a vintage dirt track sprint car that ran 1949 & 1950. I am in the process of restoring it and was not sure about a transmission. I really appreciate your help setting me straight Fred. I am having some trouble locating a trans locally.
I can post before photos of the car and (in progress) photos if people are interested.

I have an H motor but I would like to use the early G car trans with the banjo style rear output. I'd like to find a complete pull out for a G if you know of anyone with one.

Thanks for all your help!

Jeff

You can use the regular V8 trans with the H (I think) if you use the '48 - '51 pickup bell. I know that Ford used the same transmissions for both 8 and 8 motors in the '48 - '51 pickups. The '42 - '52 pickup three speed is the same transmission case as the '32 - '39 car tranny; the difference is the rear motor mount and maybe the output shaft. You can get a bell housing from an H pickup motor and bolt a '32 - 39 car trans in (I am assuming you want a floor shifter trans not a column shifter trans).

Does your track car have a torque tube drive train (I am guessing it does because you want to use the early car trans)? What area of the nation do you live in? I have a bell housing from a '48 pickup that I don't think I will ever use. On a semi-related note I am headed to the Rosanky swap meet this weekend to try and sell my '50 (and '52 and '53 and '66 longbed). If anyone is going to be at that swap meet, let me know (before noon on Friday) and I will tell you where my space is.

On e-bay auction 4575012279 is a 1936 car trans. This will bolt up the the bell you have? What starter would you use?

Jeff

Yes, that will bolt to the '48 - '51 bell. All flathead v8 and six Ford starters, except automatic transmission versions, interchange. The starter from a '32 coupe will bolt into a '53 two ton truck. I don't particularly want to mess with shipping, but pickup bells are fairly easy to find. A lot of restorers pull out the six and install the eight, and hot rodders jank everything. Are you in Oklahoma (I ask that state because that is where the ebay trans is)?

I believe I know where a bell housing is, I also talked to a friend last night who has a everything I need. I have to take a drive his way on Tuesday about 75-80 mile trip to check things over. He has a 226 powered sprinter also and had aquired this trans etc in a package deal he made for an engine. His car runs an in-out box which needs to be pushed started and wants to keep it that way. Mine will be a little more user friendly with a starter.
If something goes sour with this deal I will for sure take your advise on the early V-8 trans and later truck 6 bell housing. Thanks for all your help!

Jeff

Well I went and bought this top shift trans, flywheel, starter and torque tube and shaft today but guess what? He couldn't find the bell housing!!

I sure could use one if anyone is willing to part with one. FRED?

This guy also has a Cyclone head for a 226, but he doesn't seem like he's ready to sell. Maybe he just wants me to shoot a price to him. What is the going rate on a good one?

Jeff

You need the starter plate and the bell housing together. I can probably sell a set but shipping will likely be expensive. I don't know size and weight off the top of my head. My parts are at my parents' place and it looks like this weekend will have other concerns (a friend from Houston is waiting out the storm here). I don't want to sound uncaring but I won't be able to deal with any parts for at least a week or two.

Watch out for late flathead V8 truck bells, they look almost the same but the bolt pattern on the block is different. Same with the starter plate.

Fred,

I'd be interested when ever you are free to help me. I'm not in a hurry I just want to have it when I am ready and dont want to worry about finding it then!

Let me know and thanks!
