Frankenstein F-150

hi, im new to this site, and i have a question for someone who has done what im looking to do. i have a 1985-ish f-150 4x4, and i want to beat the hell out of it. i have the 4.9 liter efi. im planning a turbo build, so i can have a off road beast. im gonna use a hx 35 holset turbo, with home fabbed manifold, megasquirt, and various other goodies. is there anyone that has done this before? or maybe at least someone who has done something similar. im just curious of the performance gains they experienced. actual real world driving feel, and stuff like that. any help would be appreciated. thanks, Branden.

Judging by your first four nearly identical posts in about 4 minutes, you must REALLY want some feedback! ;)

I am helping my buddy do that to his truck, which oddly enough, is a 1985 F-150 with 4WD with a 300-6. We are also using MegaSquirt I (v. 3.0) with the Squirt ‘n’ Spark firmware upgrade. We are going to snag a Ford EDIS setup from a junkyard V6 and go with crank trigger ignition controlled by the Squirt.

His engine is still in the machine shop, but it’s a standard rebuild with forged pistons, ARP hardware, mild cam, the old style carb head, hopefully 1.94/1.60 valves, basic port job.

We snagged the EFI intake and exhaust manifolds at the junkyard and a throttle body off of a 5.0 F150 (slightly larger diameter).

Though I’ve heard the Hoset HX35 is a pretty decent turbo, I decided to go the route of a larger turbo for a GMC Syclone. Here’s an example:
http://www.detroitturbo.com/cart/produc ... cts_id=373

It’s a water cooled, dual ball bearing unit with flow potential of about 550hp on a Syclone/Typhoon. My reasoning for this turbo (or one slightly larger) is SyTys also have poor flowing heads (maybe not as bad as a 300-6) and only rev to 4800rpm stock. This turbo spools great (thanks mostly to the 0.85AR turbine) on a nearly stock 4.3L truck so it should be just fine on a 4.9L with a loose converter.

We also plan to intercool it and spray methanol to help control detonation while running ridiculous amounts of boost in hopes of getting his F150 running like a modded SyTy on the street while still being able to pull his Mustang to the track. :D

that sounds like quite a combination. should haul ass. well, I'm not going that route, I need a daily driver/ weekend warrior. I just want to run no more than 15 lbs boost, and keep it reliable. I have a spare efi motor im building, and the original 85 motor but its block is split in cylinder 4. it blew a head gasket. I have the head, its been awhile since ive seen it, so i dont remember its condition. your response helped, but what I really want to know is someone who has a running turbo 300, and how it performs in off road/on street conditions. thanks for your help. -Branden.
