radiator replace

i need to replace the rad. in my mustang 66 ,200 ,auto ,stock engine no a/c
looking in catalog it offers a 2row or 3row is there any advantage to either

3 row offers better cooling, but is also bigger. You may not have enough space between your radiator and your fan if you buy the 3 row.

If you go with a three row, you can easily get a smaller fan spacer, and even upgrade to a flex fan at the same time. You will get a lot of increased cooling with this set up. Also, make sure you put on a bottom radiator hose with a wire in it. This helped me a lot!

my 2 row and 3 row were the same size from Mustangs Unlimited.

I think he means get a reinforced lower radiator hose (one with wire in it) so that it won't collapse. This is usually only a problem with older hoses, which they should be replaced long before that get to that stage.

I'm considering doing the same thing, and have the same engine/tranny profile as you do. I was looking on ebay under a search of "1966 mustang radiator", and all these $99.00 starting bid auctions come back. I beleive the company is Radiator Doctor. First of all these radiators are for V8 applications. I contacted this company, talked to a real person, they told me that they could sell me a 3 row radiator for my application, but it would be more money then ebay auctions, and that a 3row is like a 1/4" wider radiator. This would not be a problem for me, I'm guessing my fan is an inch or more away from the radiator. But I sure wish that I could find a$99.00 radiator, 3row, for a six cylinder application.
 
Yes, I do mean a reinforced hose. I put a new hose on my old radiator and it overheated several times. Then put in a new radiator, and used that "new" hose. What I found was that the hose had deteriorated from the excessive heat and was extremely soft, even though it was only used for a couple hours.....because it had overheated a few times.

I just don't see any reason to get an unreinforced hose....it is like three dollars more, and eliminates a possible problem.
 
One option is a new 2 or 3 row radiator and a slim electric fan instead of the stock fan. Fan could be possibly a pusher or puller.

Could be some room for that....

BTW is is Rad-iator or Rade-iator.....

Slade, the 3 row radiator you got from mustangs unlimated has the same clearance between the water pump as the 2 row radiator??
Why I ask i have a 2 row modine & i have about 1/4 " of clearance between my water pump and my electric fan. If the 3 row does not go any closer to the pump i will buy a radiator from them. Thanks William

If you need more cooling, go with the 3 row. They are both the same size. Fan clearance won't be an issue on a 66. Just make sure the inlet/outlets are the same size and the same orientation.

The swap is really easy. On a 65 there is no shroud and you don't have to remove any panels to get the rad. out. I swapped mine in about an hour last fall.

Izzy...let me dispell all rumors and guesses when I get home this afternoon. My old 2 row is still sitting is a scrap metal pile in the back of my yard (waiting for enough to take the recycler for cash). I'll measure the thickness of the core, not the top or bottom.

For hoses, my lower hose has the reinforcement built into the hose...I found that wire that gets inserted, tends to corrode and actually eat up some of the hose.

Slade, Does the 3 row radiator core come closer to the fan? Or is the 3rd row added to the front of the tank, The thickness will be more but which side was the 3 rd row added? Thanks William

DOH!

But I fired up the Kastang yesterday afternoon to move it out of the garage to prepare it for the trip to Al's this weekend. I'll be sure to do it when I get home this afternoon when I pull it out again for some more minor troubleshooting.
