rebuild stock head or pull later model from junkyard?

Hi all,

I have a head that looks like it's never been pulled. I'm wondering what would be most cost effective for the performance I'm looking for:

1. Pull head, modify to late model specs (larger intake valves, hardened seats, larger carb hole) and other mods (three angle valve job, mill head, port, polish, port divider)

2. Buy '79 250 head from junkyard and to the latter mods.

Don't think I can afford an Aussie.

I would buy the 79 head and do the latter mods...it might be cheaper in the long run depending on the price u pay for the head. up here i can pay $30 and get a used head with a 90 day warrenty...this will allow me to magnaflux it and see if its good or not...if its not then i can return it....but its advised to magnaflux a head anyways before doing a rebuild on it...although u could take your chances and not get it magnafluxed as well and save a few bucks more...but then u might end up with problems.

I agree about using the later head. The larger intake log will be beneficial to the mods you are considering.

I'm thinking then too I could play a little. Do some of the porting myself, maybe even try welding the port divider in place by myself.

Also, If I'm doing this a little at a time, I might be able to spring (pun intended) for a new 1:6 roller rocker set.

I think its also advised to weld in the port devider before the magnaflux...or hot tank or something...i cant remember...probably doesnt matter anyways. But yea...i've been wanting a set of those roller rockers for quite a while...beautiful things....just beauty has its price i guess. A header and 2bbl is first for my mods though....and even thats a pretty penny.
