Removed the belt driven fan...WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!

I finally got my 3-row radiator installed today. Because the 3-row is thicker I opted to remove the belt driven fan, I'm glad I did. The car feels like it accelerates a LOT quicker, I had no idea that it would make such a big difference.WOW!
Just thought you guys would wanna know!
BTW I also added a Monte Carlo bar... :) :) :)

Looking goo!!. I like the heat sheild you made, I thought of doing that, did you mount it to the header bolts?

The switch from a belt driven fan to an electric one, should give you some 5 extra horses. Not bad.
Anyhow, I' ve seen with a certain degree of concern some tendency to make the engines run cooler to extract more horsepower out of them. This is not always the truth:

There are two factors related to engine temperature that affect power output: 1) Intake charge density, and 2) friction. The first one involves an increase in power output thanks to a denser mixture entering the cylinders. But as you decrease engine temperature, the frictional losses go up. Classic research from Ford and other companies had shown that an ideal balance occurs when water and oil temperature are around 90-95 degrees Celsius. Up from that point, frictional losses continue to decline, but the effect of the temperature rise when the mixture enters the cylinders actually overcomes that improvement. So, the best choice will be to keep the engine running as close as possible to the optimum temperature range, and at the same time, by using cold induction devices and other methods to allow the engine to ingest air as cold as possible, extract maximum power out of the powerplant.
Another improvement from my point of view that comes from the installation of an electric fan, it's that engine temperature stays more even. This might be arguable, considering the purpose of a thermostat, but I know for a experience, that in normal driving, engine temp stays pretty much even, and without loosing power thanks to a continually operating belt driven fan, further improving horsepower and mileage at the same time.

Alex,

Did you hook yours to a thermostat or just a on/off switch?? Mines just hooked up to a heavy duty on/off toggle switch.

I tried a smaller version of a heat sheild like yours (my carb bowl gets hot too) but it started boiling all the fuel out of the bowl after the car sat for a while cooling off...I guess it was acting like a hot plate when it sat for awhile.... :? :?

Anyway...looks cool!! :checks:  :checks:

should give you some 5 extra horses
Martin You can really feel the difference!
The reason I got the 3-row is because my engine's temperature goes up AFTER using nitrous, I've read that this is common, but I've yet to confirm it.

Doug I'm using a toggle switch for the fan, when it get too hot (190*-200*) I turn the fan on. I've yet to drive it long distances.

My heatshield is right on top of the headers so it heats up a lot! But that heat doesn't reach the carb, maybe you could try it like this.

Alex

Alex,

Maybe I'll give it another try then! :D :D

Just a FYI...I switch my fan on as soon as I start the car and leave it on while I'm driving it. I was just turning it on when it started to heat up but it was too easy to forget to do :?

I've done it like this for 4 years now (30,000 miles) without a problem. The longest trip I made was over 400 miles one way. No problems yet with just running the electric fan all the time.

Doug

Any more pictures of the heat shield. You've given me an idea.

Also, if using an electric fan, has anyone given any thought to just wiring it up so it's on when the engine is running? I'd be paranoid I'd forget a switch.

The Great Tim,
Concerning, "I'd be paranoid I'd forget a switch. "
I had a toggle switch at first, and the day after I hooked up me new rad and electric fan I drove to my neighbor's house and left the car idling so I could toggle the fan on and see how fast it cooled. I left the car running in idle in front of his house, and one thing led to another, and then I heard a big "kaboom!" Fortunately it was just the radiator hose popping off and coolant spraying all over his driveway (sorry Flipper). That afternoon I installed a temp swith activated at 190 degrees so I do not have to worry about forgetting about the toggle again. So I for absent minded people like me a "hands off" system is better.

That is neat Alex. Paint the top side of it black in crackle Coat VHT. The brushed stainless will reflect the heat back to the headers, and the black paint on top will ensure the heat doesn't soak into the carb. Heat is vibrating particles which can't easily come off black objets.

Well done, it's what I suggested to someone a while back. The silver painted log is a very smart idea.

I gota have a fiendish laugh. Logs rock! Glad you've included us in your inforamation.

Now we can focus on two vacuum secondary 350's round the outside, round the outside. 3 carbies, three port nitrous systems and so much power no V8 Mustang will catch you!

It amazes me that a log head has space for three Holleys, and no new manifold or header required.

MandarinaRacing, everything looks great!!! The heat shield is realy cool - ing  .

X You`r a mad man I love ya!!! Thats gotta be the coolest intake set up I`ve seen , a six pack I6 8)

Thanks guys!

Basically all that shield is a couple of aluminum sheets that I had laying around, cut some tabs for the brackets riveted them on, then bolted it on using the header bolts.

Dean I like your idea, remeber we've discussed that in the past, maybe some day if I hit the lottery I can build a killer log six

BTW, that's Will's log head isn't it?

As far as the paint, we don't have fancy schmanzy VHT paints, but a friend does sell a really cool ceramic paint!

Later guys!

Alex

Yeah, its a PhotoShop Pro Triple, care of Will. I think I'll need all his Holley tricks and linkages just to get it operating.

Well, at least I won't want to run a fan now. I can see me talking real nice to my wife"Darling, won't need this, what are you doing with your roof mounted oven fan, got a little use for it for another few weeks". I recon I could run it off a power inverter from the battery...

Oh wow, theres another idea. I can take one of those Wicked
"MandarinaRacingRat RoasterInduction kits", leave it polished, and roast food while I cruise.

Alex, it rocks, totally. Laughing gas, a electric fan, a rat roaster induction kit, and 14 second quarters. I'm starting to get more than a little envy down here. Whatever you are on, we all want some....

Must away, I now need my meds again. Excitment relaps :chill: !

PS 76maverick, I aint crazy, I'm just a little, unwell... :P  :D

The other option, and the one I suggest, on the electric fan is to run a relay with fused 10ga wire to the fan and a turn on lead that is on when in run, switch that lead so you can turn the fan off, but leave it on for normal conditions.

Hey! That's great. I always thought there wasn't enough room but your install proves it ain't so.

Like the heat shield/cook top idea too.

Does the fan interfere with the vertical hood latch mechanism support that goes not to the valance? Since I won't be building an engine for awhile (just came across a low mileage stock 200) I'd like to do some bolt on things like this to up my fuel mileage and power output without tearing into the engine. What brand/model/size of fan did you use? It look's great!

BTW- what carb and air cleaner are you running?

Sedanman

Sedanman, the current fan is a Summit universal 10" I think, I want to get a bigger one though. I've seen a Proform 16" relatively cheap.
I made some brackets that bolt to the stock radiator bolts, I didn't like the idea of attaching it directly to the radiator.
It didn't interfere with hood latch before I removed it.
The carb is a Holley 2300 mounted directly on a 1980 head, and the air cleaner is a Summit 14".

Alex

alex...how much would you sell one of those sheilds for?
just curious....

chaz

Let me patent it first, then we'll talk

I dunno...$10 :? ....that's what I paid for like 10 pounds of aluminum stock in a recycling yard....
