Replacement parts for DUI - Cap and Rotor

When I go into the Autoparts store, I need to tell them year, make and model that the cap and rotor are for. I can't tell them its for my 67 Mustang with a 200 L6.

What year make and model should I give the store in order to get the correct replacement cap and rotor for a DUI distributor?

DUI.

I called Performance Distributor and they told me I could just get it at Autozone/Checker. Just tell them it is for a mid 70's Chevy. I was hoping to get a little more exact since I don't know if there were differences between the distributors.

Unless you've got $500 I'd consider the DS2.

he had $500, that's why he currently has the DUI system, c'mon guys, pay attention to the posts so he can get some help
i was under the impression that the DUI system used a GM HEI cap and rotor, so i would think you could just get them to find you an HEI cap and rotor for a six cyl, such as a 4.3L or something

have you asked Mike?

Tell them you have a 1978 Chevy C-10 1/2 ton 2wd 4.1L 250 cuin L6. If that does not work tell them you have a 1985 Buick Regal with the 3.8L V6, you can even tell em its a turbo if you want. They are both the same part but maybe the newer one will be in the computer, it may even have a high performance option. Just get something with brass terminals that dont rattle if you shake it. The hold downs will rattle just make sure the terminals dont. Also pay attention to the way you take out the coil and put the new center contact in. Its contact then washer then coil. If you put the washer in first the contact does not stick down far enough and it wont last long.

I dont think the 4.3 ever had the large cap but i could be wrong. The small cap came out on most of the chebbys by 87.

The brown Accel 'performance' cap and rotor kit is #8129

Echlin cap #203 rotor#173

Standard Ignition Blue Streak series are blue and good quality but I cant find a part numebr for them.

i had a 4.3 with one in an '86 El Camino (go ahead, ask the guys that have been here for a while about my experiences with it)
however, i'm not sure if it was stock or not, i was able to find parts for it through that year model vehicle

Perfect! Thanks.

I haven't asked Mike because I know I can get these from the local parts places.

I was successful in finding a used DUI so I didn't need to spend the full $500, but used means needs new cap and rotor.

Thanks for the help.

The Standard Ignition Blue Streak series - are these the wires? or, instead, are these the blue verson of the cap/rotor?

I wasn't sure if all GM HEI 6 cylinders used the same cap/rotor. I guessed they might, but wasn't certain. Thanks.

Blue streak is or was a brand or at least a level withing a brand. Not sure who carries them anymore. They used to be pretty common before all the store brands. I find references to them so they still exist but their site stinks. For the 8's there are several brands and colors available but I have not seen much for the 6's. Best chance would be looking at the Regal stuff since those were sort of performance cars. Many stores stock the Accel V8 ones in their performance section I have never noticed if the 6 is there too but i would think they could order it. The large cap HEI 8's had mounting differences.

I have run DUI's on other engines, and i highly recommend the nylon rotor hold down screws. They prevent the hotter spark from grounding out to metal.

Also as routine maintenance, you should remove the rotor & inspect the advance weights for no rust buildup & free movement of the advance cam.
Light lube as necessary. these parts seem to rust up fast, possible because of the high voltage just above the advance mechanism. Bill
