Rod Length 144, 170, 200

Well, Rich and I inspected the 200 block that had the rotation problem previously posted. The crank would only rotate about 210 degrees before stopping. I tore down the engine to the short block and discovered that the rod caps are hitting the side of the block on numbers 1 and 6. We are suspecting that someone tore down this engine for minor repair and may have used wrong parts.

I need some info first on rod lengths for:

144

170

200

Lastly, I am assuming the crank for the 144, 170 and 200 have different throws so those that can confirm this, please so state.

These are the only 2 possiblities left. I will remove numbers 1 and 6 pistons and rods and check the lengths before going full guns and remove the crank.

Don,
We need pics!

Rod length probably doesn't have anything to do with it. Sounds like the crank stroke is to large...for some reason.

What is weird though is the fact that the crank turned freely indicating that there was no interference on at least one pair of rods. After turning it for the 320 degrees, numbers 1 and 6 were hitting and it is not even close.

I got this engine in a package deal and was told it had some work done on it. The cylinder walls are very smooth with some carbon buildup on the pistons and at the quench. The inside of the water passages was extremely clean, almost as if someone vatted the block. The head however had a lot of carbon on the valves and in the chamber. This all leads me to believe that someone tore it down, reassembled it and may have used the wrong parts.

Are the 170 and 200 cranks the same? From the table on CI, the rod lengths are listed as the same. The main caps are the same as the other rebuilt 200 I have ready to install in another car. All rod caps show a C0DE code. This is a 66 200 block and I can see no oversize codes on the tops of the pistons after cleaning 3 of them off.

I will try to get some pics but capturing the inside where it is hitting is going to require some good light.

kukm66,
The strokes are listed on the CI tech page, 170 and 200 strokes are listed as being .186 inches different.
