Rough Idle

I have a 76 Maverick 200 six cyl. I just bought it and drove it home about 65 miles. It wouldn't idle for nothing but ran on the highway real well. So i got it home and I have now replaced the following: Cap, Roter, wires, eliminated all the vacuum lines exept vacuum adv. and trans line. Also just rebuilt the YF 1 brl. Carb. To get it to idle I have to have the mixture screw out about five turns and I know that is not right. I did notice the throttle plate on this carb has a bend in it. I have never seen a bend in a throttle plate before, is this normal. So should I clean the carb again or just upgrade to a 2 barrel H/W carb and adapter. I read on this forum many people having idle issues and the 2 barrel seems to be a good fix. Also will my throttle linkage work with the 2 barrel set-up.

Thanks Mike

Make sure your timing and advance is working right. I helped a friend that had a similar problem that turned out to be that his advance was messed up so the base timing was wayyyyy off and it wouldnt idle. Got the advance fixed and things then fell into place. A basic compression check would be a good idea just to see where you stand, you may have some wear or ring issues that need a bit more speed to seal up and work. Other than that vac leak (egr, pcv?) or float issue, both wouuld easily be less of a factor at higher speeds. I would figure out for sure what the problem is before going to the 2bbl because you dont want to be fighiting other issues while dealing with with the 2bbl tuning issues.
