got rust like ya can't belive,,,antifreeze doen't stop it,,, try'd heavy duty radiator flush,,kinda helped,, already got a filter to catch the big stuff,,,new radiator hoses etc..... car sat around for god knows how many years with no coolant/water before I got it.like to flush it once and for all,,any ideas/sugestions?
thanks for help ideas

Don't some shops offer a "power flush"? They hook your car up to a machine and run stuff through the cooling system to clean it out.

You may need to have the radiator rebuilt.

If it has been sitting with anti freeze sometimes not so bad but in the case of my 89 Mustang which has apparently been sitting with just water in it its got brownish red mud in it.

A number of years ago I Power flushed a motor with some stuff that Prestone had.

You were supposed to drain the cooling system, fill with water and add this stuff which was some kind of caustic solution and it was wrned do not get on paint. You were supposed to run car for like 10 to 15 min and then flush. I did this and pumped out what looked like red mud for awhile to the poin that it stained the asphalt driveway for a long time.

May need to get something similar to the caustic stuff and flush it several times.

You need to rebuild the whole system.
Close off the heater hose ports on the engine and plug.
Take it to a shop and have them do a complete power flush.
Do NOT reconnect the heater to the system until you replace the tank and hoses.
Buy a new radiator and drop-in anode.
Buy a new water pump.

Note: It is not worth the money now to have the radiator rebuilt, not to mention the fact that finding someone who knows how and is willing to do it properly is hit or miss.

I went through this a number of years ago in the 200. I had flushed it a number of times with and without the mild acid. I came across this magnet that can be attached to the lower hose and was shocked at the amount of rust I got from the system. I continued to flush with just clean water every couple of weeks using this magnet until the water stayed clean. After that I added the coolant.

I don't understand the reasoning behind it but read that these magnets have been used on cooling towers to reduce the corrosion since the 20's and 30's.

The risk with some sort of a power flush is loosening things like the frost plugs. The 'right' fix is remove and strip the motor down to the bare block and have it hot tanked. Other than that sounds like you are doing all you can do.
