setting time

i think i need a quick "idiots guide"

ive never done it on a ford 6 so i thought i'd ask

its on my '76 250 mav with the stock electronic ignigtion and h/w 5200

am i going to need a tach to do it right or just hook up the gun and go?

A tach is handy but should not be required.

Nothing unusual about the 6's that I can think of.

Why are you messing with or checking the timing?

when its cold it tends to miss and backfire through the carb

it goes away once it gets warmer but it still feels like its not hitting when it should.

so i just hook up the gun and see if the mark on the balencer is lining up with the timing mark?

i have to disconnect the vac advance and plug up ts intake port too right

Sounds like you pretty much got it.

Full props to Bort62. You can also get a good result with a vacuum gauge. Hook it to manifold vacuum right below the carb and turn the dizz until you get max vacuum. Then set the idle to a reasonable level.

Then, if it pings on hard acceleration, back it off just a touch.

ok, thanks guys

most of the ignigtion is new components anyway, just never got around to the actuall timing

ive got a few projects on the shelf this weekend, hopefully i'll get to that 1 as well
