im so happy right now. remember the old slotted mags?? (we always called them slots) picked up a set today for the 68 for 100 bucks at the junkyard. they were 4 lug, 14x6's and 14x7's. they look like the ones on the starsky and hutch car with 5 slots, not 4. i guess im pumped because as far as i know these havent been made for 20 odd years, at least i havent seen them. i started cleaning them up tonight, had to start off with 320 grit sandpaper and i got just one polished out. (my fingertips are bleeding). as a kid growing up in the 70's these were popular and now you just dont see them anymore. all you had a choice of then seemed to be either keystones, cragars, or slots. havent seen the old keystones for a long time but the slots and cragars were my favorite anyway. i thing if you had a 4 lug car the cragars only had 4 spokes, which didnt look right. besides, those things weighed a ton. i cant wait to get them on the car but im tapped out again. finally got the 200 started and it ran for about a minute before i knocked off a big vaccum line and it died before i could tune it. at least it didnt knock or smoke. new fuel filter immidiately was packed with rust so i gotta get a new one before i can fire it back. everything is comming slow since not much concrete work goes on in the dead of winter but im already hyped. i might actually end up liking this car better than my 11 second pump gas n/a 67. nah, but it'll be close.

i had a set on my 66 and my 69

break other the mothers allum mag pslish

I've got 14x6 on the rear of my '60 Ranchero and 13x5 on the front. I had two other 14"ers, but they would not clear the fenders in the rear or the ball joint in the front.

Jack up you car on one side and try them on before you spend too much time polishing.

IF THEY FIT here's a DAMN DANGEROUS way to polish them IF you DON'T have Positraction Sure-grip Trac-lock etc.

Jack the rear wheel up. Block ALL of the other wheels. Take a back wheel off and put on the slotted wheel - preferably without the tire. Don't use the slotted chrome lugs - they'll crack your knuckles - use stock lug nuts, they kind of tuck into the slot. Start the car, put it in second gear, and let the rim spin.
Use 320 then 400 then 1000 then 1500 sandpapers. Spray LOTS of WD-40 on in the process. Wipe it clean every now and then with rags and more WD-40.

About your fuel filter clogging. Get a large (2 in dia , 3 inch long) CLEAR universal inline filter (from Walmart) and put it BETWEEN the fuel pump and the frame. There's probably a rubber hose there now. That will stop the gas tank gunk from wrecking the fuel pump. It will take MUCH longer to clog. Since it is clear, you'll see when it is getting clogged. AND, it it MUCH cheaper than the little screw-in filter on the carb.

Have fun and BE CAREFUL

Are those the ones that came on some Pintos and Mustang II?, it sure sounds like it.

IMO they look better than the factory types...

I have a set on my '66. Have been there at least the 22 years the car has been in the family. And i am looking for a set for my 57 Chevy.

8) In this area when I was a late teen/early 20's we called em' astros, after another chrome steel wheel the same type.

well, it aint all a bowl of cherries. i picked up the two front 14x6's friday at the yard and upon inspection noticed that one of the wheels isnt the same as the other 3. the hole for the centercap is slightly larger, and the backspacing is 1/2 inch different. i brought it to the sellers attention hoping he would cut something off the price....no dice. he kinda pi$$ed me off by stating "hey, its going on your wife 6 cylinder car anyway" like that made it acceptable to run an odd wheel. id dont half a$$ anything so i guess i'll be looking for a mate in the swap meet. i went back in the yard to see if there would be a mate but all i found was a set on a 74 mustang II and the bolt holes were 4 1/4 instead of 4 1/2. i had to start with 220 grit sandpaper and gradually step down the grit till i got to 2000. i taped my finger tips up and wore rubber gloves. the first wheel took a day, the second was a bit rougher, took 2 days. the front ones arent as rough, but my hands are shot. my wife just saw the prices on these wheels new and couldnt believe it. heck i didnt know they were making them again. i got the car running again. took a coffee can and run the fuel line into it and cranked the engine till the gas cleared up and ran clean. hooked it back up with a new filter and set the timing. this sucker fires up in a split second and runs really clean despite the way the plugs and inside the valve cover looked. the only smoke was black when you hit it quick with the throttle, so the pump shot from the hw5200 is way too rich. gonna call langdon and see if i can make it leaner. it idles a little rough at first but once warmed up its smooth as a baby's bottom. once i get the wheels and buy tires/lugs, all that should be left is to rebuild the brake system. then i can throw the seat in and finally test drive it and get an idea of the manners. its going slow since money is always tight for us in the winter months. there's always the nuclear option (credit card) but so far i've been able to resist the temptation. thanks for all the info.
