Some Radiator Questions, XK-XP

REDLINE 10K
OK, there are a few basic options. I want to be sure of more than adequate cooling on my warmed over 221 (with a couple of accessories fitted). Typically, people have:

Fitted an XW or similar V8 radiator with reduced size fittings for the hoses
Installed XT/XW 221 radiator as is, with light butchery to the radiator support
Used the original radiator with heavy recore (three or four row)
Used a crossflow radiator with relocated battery and adapted fittings

I need airflow, as the car will sit in traffic. It will also suffer restriction from the AC condenser. No plans for auto or PS, but you never know... The other important bit is to use parts which are readily available/adapted. An AlfaSud radiator might work great (random choice!) but imagine getting another at short notice/decent price.

So: Frontal area, core lengths, core depths - what comes first in preferred scenarios? In all types, a 14 fin (as opposed to 12) would be the choice.

Adam.

You havent mentioned what you plan to do fan wise?
I did it like this:-
XY 250 rad (windsor V8 is same) two row with smaller pipes, electric fan in front of rad, ( works better behind to my mind and this may suit you better for AC) which allows for room behind for other things.
Move battery to rhs of boot with longer cable.
Run 55a alternator from later six.
This will work without problems.

Yep, the alternator thing is sorted already. I would have liked to be able to beef up the XT Email one but it seems impossible. Fans - yes, I realised electric was likely; I've seen two smaller ones on some V8 conversions, and one large one with others. Behind would be better if it will fit... Being a wagon, I don't really want a rear-mount battery (don't know enough about the gel types). Aircon is '70s type underdash (NFI about current draw there).

I am pretty on top of things like the thermo-advance for the dizzy (I think); just that Sydney traffic can be slower than walking (proven  ) and you're stuck an hour or more sometimes.

This will help my "radiator cull". I am about sick of having so many lying there. Did you open out the hole for the radiator, Jeff, or just use adaptor plates? And was the two core an economy move or is there a reason?

Thanks, Adam.

Adam, please remember I did this almost 20 years ago, so its getting just a touch hazy. When I had a 250-2v in the P i used a two row with electric fan in front, but when I went V8 I used 3 row Valiant V8 core with Falcon XY tanks with twin electrics in front again.
I dont remeber opening out the hole at all and I definately didnt have adapter plates. I did have the rubber mountings when I went 3 row. I also used an oil cooler with the V8 (mazda rotary) and remote filter. I used a Slant six val bracket and Fiat tractor filter with Ryco flexible lines, this worked a treat.
Whats the "thermo dizzy" you mentioned, your not useing the old all vacuum advance are you?
Battery in back, well you could use a sealed one in a case (marine) and vent to outside, Ive done this in the back of a Datto 240Z i did a while back.

The dizzy is the rebuilt/recurved XE type, with the fatter shaft fitted. You use a thermo switch like fitted to aircon Clevos or Blue motors, there are different temp settings; when it kicks in it opens up the manifold vac passage to the advance on the dizzy. You can introduce a controlled leak (pinhole) to restrict the advance effect. So when it gets a little warm at idle, it raises the RPMs a tad, and circulates more coolant.

I know about the slant filter adaptor fitting up nicely, and it looks cool, but was worried about pressure loss with the extended run of lines.

At least there is room around the motor!

Thanks, Adam.

use an early landcruiser 55 series, the hoses are on the corrrect side, its the same dimensions and it 4 cores thick.
