So -

I've had this high-pitched squeal/whine occur occasionally when driving. Today it was almost non-stop. Here are the symptoms. Lend me some opinions:

* the squeal is consistent - doesn't fluctuate in pitch
* happens (almost) exclusively when applying gas (has occasionally happened in park)
* is not the belt, as the same sound existed before and since i replaced the belt + alternator.
* I don't THINK it's the transmission, because the sound SEEMS like it's coming from the engine proper. It is sort of piercing and hard to pinpoint when under the hood.
* my trans fluid leaks but i keep it to the fill line... there is oil at an acceptable level.

All my friends are dumb. One says belt. One says bearing but doesn't know what bearing. One says transmission. I don't say anything cos I'm dumb.

Thanks.

tom.

It might be air screaming as it goes past the throttle blade when you crack the throttle open. They can be loud - the aircleaner is as much muffler as it is cleaner.

Pull the belt off and start it. Run it for not very long and watch the water temp.

No squeek, then it is the belt, alternator bearing, or water pump bearing. I have had alternators do this before.

Squeek, then have fun.

If you thought it could be the belt and you tightened it and tightened it again and so on, you have put too much pressure on the alternator pulley. Doing this causes the bearing to go bad due to uneven wear. I may not be the greatest mechanic in the Air Force, but I have replaced my share of alternators because the belts were too tight. Take a look at how well the pulley spins with the belt off. If it feels like there is a flat spot or a slight drag while spinning it, you need a new alternator.
