Starter Solenoid

What's the difference between the old style and new style solenoids? The new ones are "diode suppressed". Does this mean there's a diode across the contacts to prevent arcing? What's the real advantage? Is it there for electronic ignitions/management?

I am not sure...but I am using one off my old 84 tbird on my fairlane. it is the newer style one and has been working fine for 3 years now.

On this same theme, what year newer (better or smaller) starter will fit a 1968 200 block, I just now clear the hedders with the stock starter and a little more clearence may add years to the starters life? I know someone out there was talking about a much smaller starter that fits?

You'd be looking for a permanent magnet, gear reduction type starter. A common Japanese brand here is "Shine" (think it's Shinetsu in full). Did Jack say the V6 size starters fitted?

Adam.

Ok, so I get it now, the old style solenoid, which I had one that last 10yrs/100,000 miles, and only went bad because of shoddy construction, in which the coil wire is just laying against the backing plate for contact, and the cheap gasket leaked, so it corroded and had no more conduction, that supposedly arced the contacts all the time, has to to be updated with the new $.30 diode solenoid for $10 retail cost....I love technology!

Go to http://www.cvrproducts.com/main.html and click on the tech section. Either the 5055 or 5056 will fit your 200, but you'll need to pull your starter to measure the depth of the nose.

I have one for an FE on my hybrid. Much smaller and lighter.
