Starter Troubles

well today at the gas station I go to start my car and the starter goes out. It sounded like it just fell apart and pieces were rattling inside the trans. I took it out and the bearing had blown apart. I had a problem when I went to replace the starter a few months ago that the bearing kept hitting when I engage the starter. I tried a few different starters and it happened on all of them so I thought it was normal. Is it normal for the bearing to be hitting like that? What can I do to fix this problem?

There's no flywheel in this trans. The teeth are on the outside of the torque converter. It doesn't hit all the time only when I'm starting it.

I just went to a starter rebuild shop today and told him the situation with my starter. He gave me some measurements to take and compare them with the ones he gave me. Well my measurements were an 1/8" shorter than what they should be. He told me that I am missing the 1/8" spacer plate that goes between the trans and the motor. What's happening is the ring gear on the torque converter is now too close to the starter so when the starter shoots out to engage the starter goes in too deep and it's hitting the bearing behind the starter gear. The guy said I can try to space it out with washers until I can get the spacer plate. Does anybody know where I can get the spacer plate for a C4 with a 200?

Got to the junkyard and pull the starter motor and the spacer. It's just a ring with a loop on the side that goes between the housing and the front of the tranny. You, or they, pull the starter to get the ring. If you take the starter, you'll have a spare or a core for next time. It's the same amount of work either way.

Is this spacer called a block plate? I was looking on the internet to see if I could find one and I found these spacers called block plates that look like what I might need. Is this a spacer that goes all the way around in between the trans and motor or just in between the trans and starter?

I'm looking in my Mac's catalog and they have are transmission to block spacer plates, it's a big plate that goes the trans and block though. Is this what I need or do they make just a small spacer for the starter?

Does anybody have a picture of the spacer that I need? I want to try to make it out of sheetmetal myself so i don't have to search the junkyards.
