Starter

Hello ,
I have 66 mustang with A/T .
I would like to change my starter , I buyed it on rockauto .
I have a question , when I remove my starter I discover this part between engine and starter .

I have nerer seem this part on handbook .
Is it normal ?

Looks like a spacer and is not a standard 1966 Ford part. Ford used two different ring gear off sets of 3/8 and 3/4 inch this depends on the type of transmission you have (i.e. an Auto or Manual). Measure from were the starter bolts on (block plate) to the flex plates ring gear, then measure your starter off set to see if it's right, then you won't need the spacer. However if the new starter is exactly the same offset as old one you may need to use it. If you want take a picture of the two starters together showing the starter drives and were the starter bolts on I could verify it for you. One other possibility is that the trans bell housing was bolted to the engine without having the block plate (tin spacer plate) that is suppose to be installed first on the back of the engine block. Your english has always been very good here but
sometimes we use part names even each one of us can not identify easily…
(block plate, ring gear, starter off set, etc)
as we use different names for the same things.

That's odd, it's like a spacer for a 2 bolt manual transmission starter, but you have an automatic transmission which would use a 3 bolt starter. How many bolts does your starter have? I wonder if you have a MT starter that someone set up to work with the AT, and the spacer is to shim it out so that the teeth engage properly...
