does anyone know if there is any difference between the XC and XD manual steering boxes? i want to change the power steering in my XC coupe to manual and i already have a XD box lying around. is the any difference in ratio between XC/XD?

Also will the 9" diff out of a 351 ZH fairlane bolt straight into an XC sedan/coupe?

And is there an easy way to upgrade the front disc brakes? i've been told to use either alloy calipers off an XF or calipers off a WB ute as they bolt straight up. any other ideas?

thanks

Why get rid of your PS? the PS box is 16 to 1 rather than 20:1. Otherwise I think they should bolt up.

Should do! Are they both leaf spring?

No, try something allong the au2 line for caliper/disc, there 2 piston, and the disc is thicker, but dont know about interchangability. There isnt a great deal wrong with the stock stuff, unless your going very fast often, like cct racing.

No difference from 1972 until 1991 (XA through to XG). Pitman arm the same, ALL boxes the same. Just not so easy to dump it into an XK-XY

1.Stock unassisted XA-XC's had 5.5 turns lock to lock, 22:1.

2.RPO option 16:1, 4.0 turns lock to lock. GT's, GS, XD ESP. (72-82)

3.Stock unassisted XD-XF had 5.25 turns lock to lock, 20:1

4.Power steering, ~13 to 11.5:1 on centre verses full lock, 2.6 turns lock to lock. XA-XG. Same internals as HQ-WB power steering box, but with different case. All Falcon power steering was Kirby~Bishops, designed by a Famous Aussie, and first found on US Camaros/ Mustangs in the late 60's, took two years to get put on the local product!)

thanks for the info on the steering gear will swap it this weekend. I would keep the power setup but it leaks and is taking up space and weight.

Also my question bout the diff was whether it bolt straight without modification, as is are they the same length flange/flange and between the spring perches?

I can't remember what a ZH is... Wasn't that the XC-based luxo-liner?

*The pre72 (XW/Y) stuff is narrower, with a 58.5" track verses 60", but the perches are the same.

*The disc brake 9" diff stuff in the XA-XC era was not the same as the post 79 XD/E/F/G stuff. (Good thing too, the early pre XD stuff chops out the shrink ring that holds the splined drive shafts, and 9 out of every ten are wheel dropping distasters waiting to happen.)

* The drum braked Aussie market 9" is the toughest 9" in the world. Nearly all the private US import stuff is of a lessor quality. The Aussie stuff had no steeped axles or poor quality external tubes like most US stuff has. They are as good as you'll get,

*The XY GTHO was 31 spline axles, and was the same spec as the Cobra Jet,Super Cobra Jet and Boss hipo-Henries.

*98% of Aussie 9 inchers are 28 spline, and all are limited slip, unlike some of the US imports.

* 9" ers were never made in Australia...the Geelong and Broadmeadows crowd had the pick of Michigans finest.
