Still working on getting the engine running

As some of you know, I fired the engine up successfully several times after the 2bbl carburetor upgrade but then it stopped working. I bought a new solenoid (I was pretty sure that would solve it) but that did not help. I am now thinking that it is the ignition switch that is giving me trouble. I am going to buy a new ignition switch online and while browsing around I thought about getting a new coil. What kind of coil should I get for my 1968 200ci I6? I assume I should get a Flamethrower coil because I hear great things about them. Can I use a FT coil with my stock ignition?

Thanks,

Justin

Justin, you need a test light or a voltage meter to find if you have power to the solenoid, starter, coil + side. if you have a pertronix setup use the flamethrower coil. if you have a duraspark with the msd use a msd blaster coil. just get in there with a test light & see if you have power at the right spots. good luck. william

not only POWER in the right spots but GROUND (earth for you aussies). I have chased a non-startion problem on a pickup I bought for a week trying different things, cables, solenoid, starters only to find that there was no ground from the battery to the body, none.. that sucked but was easily fixed..

I used a multimeter and tested the voltage from the battery to the solenoid and they both registered 12.5 volts. I also measured from the solenoid to the starter and that also registered 12.5 volts. I did not measure the coil yet. I checked all the grounds as well. I will re-check everything tomorrow. I would like to do a Petronix setup in the future. Can I still use the Flame Thrower coil with my stock setup?

Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure you can run the FT coil with the stock ignition, but you MAY have to use a ballast resistor (in addition to the stock resistor wire)... I say MAY because hotter coils have a tendency to burn the points up quicker.. MSD Blaster coils include the resistor in the coil kit for this purpose...

If you can swing the $$, I'd recommend getting an Ignitor (I'm assuming you already have a non load-a-matic dizzy).. especially since you've just done the 2 bbl upgrade.
