Strange 68 200 Running sound

Here's a link to the distributor comparison (love the tech articles!).

http://classicinlines.com/DizzyCompare.asp

Basically, a pertronics is more reliable long term than stock Load-O-Matic (unless you lose a magnet) but all the associated mechanisms are the same like vacuum advance. Upgrading to a DSII gets you mechanical advance, and there are articles on tuning that advance to fit your engine better. I've got one in the garage I'm looking forward to rebuild and toss in, with an HEI module, and I'm exploring hot coils.

EDIT: It's almost, but not quite a drop in upgrade, as the resistor in the ignition wire should (must?) be bypassed. as the article says, the wiring is the hardest part, though i think with the harness from the Fairmont, it should be a little easier.

Would the swap be as beneficial if I don't have the loadomatic distributor? Cause I have mechanical advance on the 68 dizzy.

With a 68 distrib you already have the good mech, and vac. advance so it’s not going to be much of a difference

You might listen to the fuel pump (the arm pivot point can wear) with a broom handle or just touch it, you might be able to feel or hear it

I would think a F.pump may B "click"? Any 1 else - can U correct me?
Length of hose (any tube but hose is flexible) to the ear and other end placed around (a la stethoscope) and about often locates origin of an engine sound. Sounds like bottom end just by ur very short 2 wrd description...can U say more (esp after my/bub's idea)?

Man i wonder how you know these things!! I have been seeing some fuel leak out of the pump and have been wondering what it could be. Do i have to replace the fuel pump now? It took you to hint it for it to hit me And i drive and see that car every day!! Thanks so much bubba!!! I just described it wrong, it is more of a click. Thanks Guys

Just an educated guess from many years working as a Mech.

I have been seeing some fuel leak out of the pump and have been wondering what it could be. Do i have to replace the fuel pump now?

Yes if the fuel pump is leaking replace it "Now" it’s an easy job. Though the noise may be annoying Fuel leaking anywhere is more of a safety thing as a stray spark or other ignition source and it's a car Bar BQ have seen those results too.

:( Also.if fuel leaks into the crankcase,it could potentially dilute the oil enough to cause engine failure.Have seen that too.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

When the post was first started, it sounded like a driveability problem. Did you ever resolve that condition??

If you purchase a carter mechanical pump, check the lever to make sure it contacts the camshaft on the full flat contact surface.

The last 5 carter pumps i've seen the arm is twisted & the contact surface is not parellel to the mounting bolt holes. This results in just the edge of the arm coming in contact with the camshaft eccentric.

Like what was previously stated if it also leaks, either park it or replace the pump.

Check the oil level for being overfull because of fuel leaking into the crankcase & check the oil for smelling like its been diluded with fuel. Glad you found part of your problem. Bill

I did solve the drivability problem, although i'm still seeing a vacuum gauge with a vibrating needle. Ive been using marvel mystery oil for a while now and the poof went away after a couple timing adjustments. The vibrating needle has me questioning things.
