i have a stupid question but im not familiar with sixes so please dont kill me, but how can i tell if i have a small log head or a large log head

Tell us what the casting code on the head is. Someone here should be able to tell you.
The code should be on top of the log. Starts with a letter, then number, like C9..., D7..., EO....
Letter is the decade C-60's, D-70's, E-80's.
Number is the year in that decade.
Usually designates when a part with that design first came out.

C4 transmissions came out in 1964.
C6 transmissions came out in 1966.

Since you have a 79 engine, the head could be a C9, D3, D5, D7, or D8, but not a E0 which came out in 1980.

You probably have a 1240cc or 1345cc log head. But can't confirm without the casing code.

casting code was a fail only thing i could see was the firing order on top theres like a plate covering the part i need i think :| . it looks long and thick if i had my camera id take a pic.

8) small log heads tend to be round, where as the large log heads tend to have a flat top, assuming i am recalling this correctly.

Look on top for a # that starts with a D

Firing order is stamped on top of the log head, one side of carb. Casting number is on the other side.

i wont be able to get it then theres a rod that looks like it comes from tranny up to the back of that log that attaches to a bar thats held in place on top of the log with a plate thats covering it up

Howdy back All:

Granada- If your 79 head is stock and original then it is likely a D8BE. It is a large volume log Of either 1345 ccs or 1420 ccs. IT will have 1.75 intake valves and 1.38" exhaust, and a 1.75" carb hole. FoMoCo changed from a Carter RBS carb to a Holley #1946 about this time. Your engine could have either. DO you know which carb your engine has?

If the carb is a Carter YF- it is not the stock, original carb, or your engine is a 200. To the best of my knowledge a Carter YF was never a factory carb on a 250 engine. Is the fuel bowl an integral part of the carb, or does the fuel bowl sit in front of the carb body?

I've pulled YF of a Maverick w/ a 250.
YF or YFA, there are two styles are there not?

Handbook say's " The YF was also used on the 250 engine from 1975-79. The 250 version of the YF was rated at 195 CFM" Just happened to remember reading that, so I checked.

ive decided to go with alum head and intake so it dont mater no more(i change my mind alot) thanks for all the info though. only thing im stuck on now is what carb to use? is the weber gonna make enough for classic inlines alum head,mild cam and intake with headers or do i need to go a little bigger? im keeping 2 brl no mater what any suggestions would be helpful :thanks:
