Hi all, have a 63 170-2speed, bought a 79 200 w/C4 and Trans adapter, swaped the oil pan (only 390.00 ouch) talked to pony carb and am looking at 239.00 + 70.00 + 100.00 to recurve distributor, need to swap short shaft water pump, shorten drive shaft,What really scars me is the electrical stuff such as, where do the new and old wires meet and what to do with them like alternator, reg; and stuff. Am retired so I have the time, big money has to be discussed with the better half. Thanks for listening WEM

Why didn't you just swap the oilpan? Anyhow, no need to recurve distributor, look at the sticky "Duraspark 2 swap" at the top of the forum, it'll give you a bunch of good info and cheap ways to do things. The alternator/reg and stuff can be found by searching on the forum, and http://www.madelectrical.com has a bunch of stuff too.

The electricals should be pretty straightforward, though. There are only so many wires in a 63!

Welcome to the forum.

First, WELCOME to the forum... We'll try to help you save some green stuff.

I'm not certain what you're doing.

The oil pan off your 170 will bolt onto the 200. You would also bolt the 170 oil pick up tube from the 170 onto the 200 oil pump. Should only cost the price of a gasket.

The short water pump from the 170 will bolt onto the 200... Use the 170 crankshaft pulley with the 170 pump so that the water pump and crankshaft pulley grooves line up.

If your 170 pan didn't fit and if the 170 water pump has three attaching bolts and the "200" water pump has four bolts to attach to the block - then I have it figured out! 200's use 3 water pump bolts. 250's use 4 bolts.

Don't worry about recurving the DuraSpark at all. Get it wired up and running. Then you'll know better what you need.

On my alternator, I used the newer-styled electronic voltage regulator. I was a breeze to hook up.

Finally a plug - the book in my signature has 3 1/2 pages on the 170 to 200 swap.

Thanks for your replys. My mind goes a little faster than my typing, Is the carb plan a good idea (about 300.00) or go with an adapter and a different carb. Oh Dennis, I have your book and it's great stuff but, I think that's what's getting me in trouble, you make it sound so easy. I'am planning on swapping the 170 w/2speed with a 200 w/C4 in a 63 Falcon ranchero (2 speed tranny 's 2nd gear went out today). I bought a 79 Ford fairmount an stripped everything I could off it, got a tranny adapter. Could I keep the water pump and go with a electric pusher fan.

Dennis makes it sound easy because it is. Get a little confidence and hang in there, we'll help.
On the carb, just check the local AutoZone. It'll be about $100 and as long as it's rebuilt correct, it'll provide you with all you need. If you really want to make it spit though, you'll have to upgrade to a 2 barrel. My suggestion is just use as single barrel and get it running first. Who knows, it may be just enough for what you need. It is for me.
Send me an e-mail to my home address and I'll send you a few easy-to-read schematics on gen-to-alt wiring and a few others. lagrasta@cox.net.
Also, I run only a pusher fan with no problems. Again though, I would stick with the mechanical until you get it on the road, then you can upgrade if you choose. I run a electric fual pump as well.
lastly, don't be afraid to use ebay. There are many, many deals.

I swapped my old 170/manual for a later 200/manual, it's really straightforward. http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31268 has details and pics.

Seriously, you could swap the 200 in, keeping everything (carb, water pump, generator, fan/pulleys) off the 170 except the ignition and maybe the exhaust manifold.

I don't know why you'd need a trans adapter, though. The trans should already be bolted to the engine? Unless you're talking about a C4 trans mount...

Wiring: the simplest/cheapest thing to do now is keep the '63 charging system (generator, right?) if it's working. If you want to upgrade, there are lots of options: Swap to a Ford alternator with an external regulator, swap to a Ford alternator with internal regulator, or swap to a 1-wire GM alternator. You can search the board for threads on them, or if you know which route you like let us know and we'll advise.

Ignition: I'd keep the ignition that's on the 200 as it is until you get the engine swap sorted out, then it's easy to recurve the dizzy yourself, all you need is a timing light, hand tools, and some patience.

Carbs: Personally, I *HATE* parts-store "remanufactured" carbs, I haven't seen one in 10 years that wasn't a total abortion. If your 170 carb is ok, you can keep it (it'll be a little small, but it'll work for cruising around town). If you want to upgrade, the Pony carbs Autolite 1100 is a good but not-cheap option, or you could watch here for a deal on a decent Ford/Autolite 1-bbl, or maybe a 2-bbl.
