So I was reading some old threads and just want to confirm what I'm reading:

If I put in a higher temp thermostat (like a 190 or 195), it will directly translate into a faster warmup come wintertime and hotter air coming out of the defroster?

If I do this changeover, are there any other adjustments that need to be made at the same time?

thanks. tom.

I don't believe it will result it faster warm up times, but it will heat up to a higher temp. It should allow more hot air out of the heater/defroster (at least in theory).

No changes needed so long as your cooling system is in good shape. Also, the 195 is the correct standard thermostat for the 200s.

What part of MA are you in Tom? I'm in Taunton.

Yeah, I was having overheating problems a few years ago and i think i overcompensated and chucked in a low thermostat... i forget what though. I replaced my radiator at the time, and I think that was really the culprit.

I'm out in W Mass, Northampton.

thanks for the confirmation.

hey, quick really basic question -

I'm replacing my thermostat tonight I hope... do i need just a new gasket, just the blue silicon gasket gunk, or both?

I'm sorta dumb.

Thanks.

I put a 160F T-stat in my Mustang when I "upgraded" the cooling system my fiurst year. But when I drove it late into the next Fall, the interior would never heat up. Replaced it with a 185F or 190F t-stat and it was nice and toasty inside :) . The temp that the t-stat opens DOES make a big difference, or it did for my car.

I have always used a gasket and a THIN coating of the blue stuff. Never had a leak. :D

Changing thermos won't affect warm-up time just the temp at which the cooling system begins doing it's job. With a higher temp. thermo you will get better heat though. Also, the aftermarket heater box plenum I just installed with the seal kit for the heater box itself was a great improvement over the paperboard original. Well worth the time & money spent. CJ Pony has the plenum for $13.95 and the seal kit from them is $9.95. They're on-line @CJPonyParts.com.

grrr.... So I popped in a 195 this weekend and though the car APPEARS to be running fine.... now the temp guage isn't reading anything.... it just sits on cold. So now I'm thinking maybe the thermostat went in a little crooked... maybe blocking up the works somehow? I mean, I don't know much, but I know I didn't screw up my temp sending unit (which i replaced last year.) my thermostat housing is pretty worn on the edges, so maybe the thermostat shifted in it's seat a bit...

anyone ever heard of this mini-phenomenon? Air bubble? Defective stat? What?
