Throttle shaft worn?

Tonight I replaced the carb base to intake gasket and the carb gasket. Again the car ran great till the engine warmed up then it started dying and backfiring thru the tail pipes. I decided to rebuild my carb. After I got everything back together, I started the car and let it warm up for 5-10 minutes before I did anything. I proceeded to adjust the idle screw (not the mixture). I barely turned the screw and the engine died. I then started it up again and the car when back to running bad and dying. I am thinking the throttle shaft is worn. I did spray a little carb cleaner around the shaft end which changed the idle ever so slightly. When I had the carb apart, I did not pull the shaft out. I did check for play but it didn't feel too bad?

Do you guys think I am on the right track? Would a worn throttle shaft cause backfiring?

I will call around tomorrow and see if I can find a carb shop here in town to re-bush my 1bbl.
