Timing Chain Observations...

I rebuilt mine back in 99 or 2000 (while we were still on the Clifford forums) and as most of you know I beat the piss out of it!

I started tearing the engine down today (planning on freshining it up) and I noticed this problem with the stock timing chain,

There ia between 3/4"-7/8" of play in the chain as best as I can measure!!

I'm assuming that would affect the timing/cam timing just a bit...

I'm upgrading to a double roller timing chain and gears and I would suggest that if any of you other guys are planning on a "Hi-Po" build up like mine, you should address this problem with a upgraded timing chain setup!

Doug,

One thing, doesn't it matter which side you check? Make sure you check the actual pulling side of the chain. looks like you did though if you checked the bottom (that is IIRC).

The double roller timing chain is nice though.

Well, we always say here that the stocker is accurate enough for about 20K miles on a warmed over motor (I think Mike might even mention this on his site  ) - Doug, you must have got close to this figure, no?

Adam.

Slade,

I'll have to look at my manual again but I thought it was only supposed to be around 1/4" free play to be in spec...I could be wrong though??

I'll look again tomorrow, but I thought there was 8 or 10 degrees movement in the crank (looking at the timing pointer) before the cam would move if you turned the crank back & forth

Adam,

I think there is probably around 20,000-25,000 on there IIRC :D :D

Not a lot of miles in 4 or 5 years but I like to keep it out of the rain!

:?: How about using a Gear Drive Timing Set like Mike sells :?: Wouldn't that hold up better?

DOUG, I HAVE BUILT MANY ENGINES, THE ROLLER CHAIN IS THE WAY TO GO. LESS FRICTION & ALMOST NO STRETCH. WITH YOUR COMBINATION THIS IS THE WAY TO FLY. BY THE WAY WHAT IS YOUR CRANKING C OMPRESSION WITH YOUR SETUP?? JUST INTERESTED. V/R WILLIAM :D

Russell,

I'll have pics of it in a few weeks

Bill & William,

I got a new double roller timing chain & gear set from Mike last year.....just never had a chance to install it.

When I assembled the engine I bought what I could from Clifford Performance (camshaft & related parts) and built an indestructable bottom end so when I could find more "Hi-Po" parts I could add them as I got the time. Clifford catalog showed a performance timing chain set, but it was always on back order when I tried to order it!

Now I finally got the time to install all these cool looking parts!

Not sure what the cranking cylinder pressure is? (Never checked it)....I know with my new head gasket, it figures out to be 10.5:1 compression.

Thanks trueslayer! I thought it was somewhere in that area!!

Mike (AzCoupe) sells them. Billet heat treated steel gears, nine-position keyway, replacement chain available separately (to order)... A nice part.

Went out in the shop this afternoon....

I put a breaker bar on the balancer, spun the engine a few revolutions one way, then very carefully & slowly moved the crank the other way untill all the slack was taken up.....The timing mark on the pulley showed 10 degrees of movement before the cam started to move....

Not good??
