Timing question on rebuild

This has probably been answered before, but I can't find the thread.

I assume the #1 cylinder is closest to the front of the car - correct?

When the timing marks on the sprockets line up, is the numer 1 cylinder supposed to be at TDC on it's compression stroke? Assume #6 is also at TDC on the exhaust stroke?

Looking from front to rear, which direction does the crankshaft rotate - CW or CCW?

Thanks - this is a great forum. Have had many questions answered just by browsing!!

#1 is the front cylinder.

TDC happens twice, once on compression, once on exhaust. With the timing marks lined up, it should be on compression, but you'll need to rotate the crank to get it assembled, so check TDC again when you install the distributor. My favorite way is to just put my thumb over the spark plug hole and crank the engine until compression builds, then line up the timing mark.

Looking from the front, the engine rotates clockwise. The distributor also rotates clockwise.
