Has anyone come up with some kind of a kit to deal with adjusting valve lash on 223's?

My rocker arm assembly is pretty beat, and i find myself adjusting my valves every 4-5 weeks.. i'v been driving this truck for close to 13 years, and its starting to get old. :)

I dont see *how* you would work around this, but there are alot smarter people than myself out there.

If your 223 is one of the later models, I think '61 to '64 Ford passenger cars had a "silent-lash" or "zero-lash" setup. It wasn't like hydraulic lifters, though. The rocker arms had a special spring-loaded cam at the tip, and it took up the excess valve lash as it rotated.

Sometimes, you see whole assemblies on eBayMotors.

I think those cars may have had a different camshaft profile, though.

If your cylinder head doesn't have hardened exhaust valve seats, frequent adjustment may also be required.

I'm running hardened intake/exhaust seats..

Hrm. I'll have to look into those rocker arms a bit more..

Thanks.

Just curious, do they get looser or tighter? 'Cuz on air-cooled VW's getting tighter is a bad sign..... valve head just about ready to let go

They get looser.. My 223 spends alot of time running in the 2700-3100 rpm range.. rattles them loose pretty quickly. :)

Hey Cal, have you found a solution?

I'm sick of adjusting mine, too.

I watched ebay, and found an entire NOS valvetrain for $15.

Installed that, and I havent had a problem since.

In fact, my engine runs smoothly at 500 rpm higher than it used to.

I have two or three rocker assemblies in pieces I had been using to mix and match before..
