Towing assistance

Okay...it was bound to happen and finally it did. After daily driving my mustang for the last 5 years, I finally got completely stranded. My cable clutch's cable snapped this morning about 1 mile from work. Unfortunatly that puts me 22 miles from home.

My question is this. For 22 miles, do I need to get a flatbad trailer or will it be okay to use a front wheel car dolly for that short of a distance? It's all back roads and no speeds above 50MPH.

Now to find a ride home....hmm....

I thought older manual transmissions were alright because they are splash oiled. Its autos and newer manuals that have a pump in them that has to have the input driven to operate. I think the only concern would be if there is any chance that when you hit bumps the shifter is going to bounce around and try to go into gear. I think thats more of a problem in trucks with a long lever that has a bit more weight to it.

You could always put it on the dolly backwards. Thats how they tow RWD cars if the driver has a brain.

If it was my car I dont think 22 miles under 50 mph would bother me either way.

Probably already solved but why not just start it in gear and drive it home. You can start it in second and very easily shift it to higher gears and kick it in neutral for stops and restart and go again. If you are go to tow it just pick up the front and go.

I guess I'm just a little squimish about driving a car with no clutch pedal, especially when some of my stops required to be made are on hills. To me, the $80 for a trailer rental is worth the piece of mind. It's why I keep my old truck around.

The question has become a moot point as a the rental facility by my house on has flatbeds...so that made the decision easier...

I would have just driven it. Unless you have a clutch starter interlock.

8) i also would have driven it. i have done it in the past with a couple of cars with no issues. as for any clutch interlocks, i would have jumped the switch temporarily.

Towing a manual tranny car w/ a tow dolly is no problem.

You can also tow it backward if you are really concerned.

I towed my ranchero 300 miles on a tow dolly from Mojave to San Jose a few months ago.

W/ a 4 cyl ford ranger, too.

You must have had fun through Tehachapi and Pacheco Pass.

Tehahachapi was the worst, but I never dropped below about 50. I got a good running start going up 58.

Did I mention that the back of the ranger was also loaded w/ my tool boxes, etc - and the back of the Ranchero was completely full of things like rearends too? It was a pretty heavy load.

I set out in the middle of the night expecting to have a very slow and very long drive, but really had no problems. That ranger pulled it with nary a complaint the entire way.

I could even pull 65 in OD on the flat parts of 5.
